Currently I’m conflicted because while I love Columbia’s core and residential structure, I’m also really attracted to the leadership resources and career advising systems available at Barnard. I was wondering if those leadership resources were open to both Barnard women and Columbia women, or just Barnard students?
I know career advising is separate at Columbia, but I mean more the Athena Leadership workshops and such. Also, career advising at Barnard seems a lot more hands on than Columbia. Can anyone speak to the advising system at Columbia, and if it is beneficial/helpful/etc.?
Thanks so much ~
As Barnard grad, there are some courses that both Columbia and Barnard students can take, if the courses begin with a “V” designation, then it is a university wide open course. Some BC courses can be taken by Columbia students, but you have to make sure it does not conflict with courses given for your major requirement at Columbia. Some of the resources are opened to both, in particular Barnard and Columbia compete on the same NCAA team together under Columbia. I vaguely recall the Athena workshops @ Barnard but you will need to inquire specifically, perhaps with Barnard directly. Career advising ( pre-med, pre-den, pre-law, etc) are separate between Barnard and Columbia. My husband went to Columbia, and in his day the premed advising was separate between the SEAS engineering and the College.
