Are certain majors looked down upon?

My girlfriend really wants to go to law school in the future, and she is now in the process of deciding her major. Her top choice is something called "Legal Studies in Business" which is basically business law. I know in general, law schools could care less about your major. But would they care if it was something like business law? Thanks for any input you all can offer!

I’m not as knowledgeable as others on this forum are, but since none has volunteered to answer, I thought I’d jump in. My understanding is that law schools accept pretty much any major. The exception is undergraduate law or legal studies. In your gf’s case, she might be better served by taking a major she’s interested in and in which she can do well, other than legal studies. A pure business course of study, art history, Japanese - anything would be better than legal studies in undergraduate school.

^That’s what I always thought, too. It seems similar to applying to medical school with a pre-med major.

Thanks for the response guys! This is kind of what I figured but it’s good to hear it from others!

ironically, the only undergrad majors that can hurt you are law & legal studies. Aside from that it doesn’t matter in the slightest.

Since the Lsat is so important, one might major in or take a lot of courses in things of that sort. I’ve heard that Math/Physics/Philosophy/Economics majors are well equipped to take the Lsat, because these courses emphasize logical reasoning and problem solving. Albeit, that only influences your test preparedness and not your actual application.

I have heard that a “vocational” degree like Criminal Justice is looked down upon. Is this true of a BA in Criminal Justice? I don’t see why this should be any more looked down on than, say, a degree in Sociology.

I have heard that degrees in pre-professional fields are looked down upon. For example, when it comes to law school, communications or criminal justice are not the most popular.

But again, legal studies is somehow not very popular either.

There’s no reason that sociology should be looked down upon.

This question has been asked a lot in different forms. Instead of recreating the wheel, I am just listing a few other threads:

Again, the best $50 you will spend is on getting the Richard Montauk and Anna Ivey books.

Anna Ivey (former Dean of Admissions at the University of Chicago Law School) also has a blog. This is her advice to Freshmen/Sophmores.
