Are Certificate/Associates programs worth it for Computer Information Systems?

Hello everyone,

I am a recent college graduate with a B.A. in Sociology. I was looking for a career change and wanted to get into the information systems field. With no prior experience I was thinking of enrolling in my local community college, where they offer a 1.5 year certificate/associates program for Computer Information Systems. They even have one for Computer Science, although I like the business applications and diversity of CIS more.

In today's job market, is even going for this certificate program worth it? Will I be able to find a job with it? In the meantime, I plan on studying for my A+ cert as well as possibly finding an unpaid internship where I could at least have something on my resume by the time I get my certificate. Do companies only want Bachelors in related computer fields? Will I be overlooked right from the beginning? Is this worth my time? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

No this is a stupid idea. If you are trying to get into the IT field, then I would enroll in an IT program in a community college. Then you can pick up some certs from the classes you take there. It’s hard to get into the computer/information science field with certificates.
