Are chances based more on Transcript/GPA/Test Scores at UC Berkeley?

Hi,

I've heard that for out-of-state admissions, UC Berkeley bases its admissions decisions more on transcript (high school courses), GPA, and test scores more than anything else. Is that true?

If so, how good are my chances, given the following information:

Unweighted GPA: 4.0
High school courses: All IB (IB diploma candidate)
SAT: 2400 (12 essay)
ACT: 35 (8 essay - I know this is low, but hopefully they will disregard in favor of SAT scores?)

Thank you!

im not sure, but if your ecs are anywhere decent then youll be in. dont worry about the act writing score, no colleges even look at it.

Yeah, a few college counselors have told me that my EC’s are excellent. They’re not unique, but I definitely have committed a lot of time and leadership to the ones I have.

agree with mcfly if you aren’t in a club, join one. lol cause you’ll be in. make sure you get good recs too.

Nah, I’m in a bunch of clubs:

Model United Nations (4 years) - President/Ambassador all four years
Student Government (3 years) - Public Relations Officer
School Newspaper (2 years) - Editor-in-Chief
National Honor Society (2 years)
Interact Club (1 year) - President
Jazz Band (3 years)
Boy Scouts (too many years to remember) - Eagle Scout

you need not worry then.

Would the same go for other major public universities? Like UT Austin and University of Washington?

YA! I think your underestimating yourself here you have a perfect GPA, flawless SATs, and great ec’s. You’re HYP material.

Why would you sent in your ACTs if you have a perfect SAT score?

UC Berkeley? If everything you’re saying is true, you should be aiming for the ivy leagues + stanford/mit…

I’d shoot for a 36 on the ACT.

@Lucifuger - In my excitement to take advantage of the four free ACT score sends, I sent my ACT score to MIT/Stanford/Berkeley/Austin (before I found out my scores, of course). I did the same with my SAT scores, so now those four schools should have both sets of scores.

If I’m not mistaken, MIT only looks at your better score. I’m not sure about the other schools though.

@Mellyse - Yes, MIT told me that they’ll only consider the better score. I’m really more concerned whether Berkeley places the greatest importance on test scores and GPA, and little importance on subjectives.

Prefrosh UCB student here. UC Berkeley is definitely number based. If you even have decent ECs (which you do), then you have very good chances of getting in. Although for UCB, ECs becomes slightly more important because you are oos, and it’s significantly more difficult for oos students to get accepted, given the limited spots and competition. Make your essays great.

Your chances look wonderful because the most important things UCB considers are GPA, class rank, course rigor, SAT/ACT, SAT II and essay and your stats look very, very good. I’ll give you a 90% in, even though you are oos.

UCB takes either ACT or SAT. they will only consider your better score–your perfect SAT score is more than enough. No need to take it again.

btw, which college at berkeley are you applying to : (engineering, L&S, or college of chemistry)? And what is your major? Your choice of college could really skew your chances.
