Just a little bit about my stats

African-American Male
GPA: First Semester Junior Year 4.45. Cumulative 4.46 (I see many people use weighted and unweighted. Not sure which one is which)
Rank: 1/73 (ranked #1 every semester since freshmen year)
ACT: 26 (retake Saturday. been getting between 29-31 on practice tests)
My Good Courses:
AP Lang & Comp.
AP U.S. History
Honors Pre-Cal
Honors Chemistry
Most Likely Senior Year:
AP Physics
AP Spanish
AP Calculus
AP Literature & Comp

These are all the AP and Honors courses offered at my school

EC's: World Language Club
National Honors Society
Natinoal English Honors Society
I tutor geometry and pre-calculus for volunteer work and have about 100 other volunteer hours

I know my EC's are weak but I'm not applying to the HYPS. My top schools are (1) UIUC (legacy/illinois resident) (2) ISU (legacy/illinois resident) (3) University of Michigan-Ann Arobr (4) University of Wisconsin-Madison (5) Ohio State University

I heard that EC's aren't that important for schools that aren't Ivy, and Ivies need them because everyone is equal in grades and stats. I'm still very nervous about my chances. I really like to tutor students in math and it's definitely that one EC I have passion for. Will that be enough? Would it be wise for me to hold an office position in the NHS and NEHS or do more service hours?

I would be thankful for any advice someone could give me.

ECs are more necessary for private schools. While I think they will be a contributing factor for any college, I really don’t think they are heavily weighted for public schools. I think you will be fine for the schools you are looking to attend.

your stats look really amazing for the colleges you’re looking to attend. i definitely woudln’t worry

You’re good dude. Don’t worry. My ecs are like urs; I think what matters is the course rigor and your gpa.

Good Luck dude and Peace

ECs aren’t that important for the schools at which you’re looking.

Being OOS, I think your chances are not so great for OSU and really not so great for UM. If you can raise the ACT score to that 29-31 area on Saturday though, that’ll change dramatically.

I’m not familiar with the 5.0 GPA scale (my school uses 6.0) and every school weights differently. It’d be easier to evaluate your chances if you were to post your unweighted GPA, but since you are val, I have to figure that what you have put as your WGPA is quite good.

Office positions in any organization are meaningless unless you actually do something. Generally, joining something senior year looks like resume padding. Stick with what you care about.

In the future, you might want to post on the What Are My Chances subforum when asking questions like these.

Public schools typically make decisions based on stats and state of residence.

I would look up the average ACT scores of enrolled students. For the non-Illinois schools, look at the out-of-state averages.

My guy says that you are automatic at U. of Illinois and especially ISU based on your GPA, though I think 26 ACT would be low for U. of I. Out-of-state is harder for admissions and your current ACT would rule out unhooked students, though race and hardship might be enough to help you to get in. A student with a #1 ranking but lower standardized scores suggests that there was something wrong with their high school (hence, the hardship I have asumed).

You’d definitely be in much better shape with a 30 ACT score, no doubt.

thanks for everyone’s input so far. For Millancad. My G.P.A is on a 4.0 scale. Do you guys think a 30 on the ACT would set me in good position for OOS

For OSU, a 30 would be much more than sufficient.

Big public schools don’t have time to mull over your individual interests and extracurriculars. For the most part, stats are what will get you in.
