Are environmental science and chemistry good degrees to double major in?

I’m really interested in field work and pollution prevention but am worried about finding a job once college is over ( I’m a high school senior now). I’m planning on going to Iowa State if that matters.

I don’t recommend getting double degrees unless you can do it in 4 years total. From your description, environmental science is probably the better choice for you. You will have to take quite a bit of chemistry for that major anyway.

If you do a bit of googling, you will find that environmental science is an excellent choice for employment.

The environmental science degree at Iowa State doesn’t actually require that much chemistry, although many of the ES courses do focus on application of chemical principles. So, chemistry could be an appropriate double major, especially for areas such as environmental toxicology. Other possible majors to consider in combination with environmental science are geology (environmental geology/hydrogeology track) and agronomy (soil science & environmental quality option). Geology especially has a number of courses that are cross-listed with environmental science. Either of those other majors would enhance job prospects.
