Are essays showing why you did bad in HS okay?

I remember someone telling me that it's never a good idea to write about how you did bad in high school as it made you seem "sulky and trying to justify something". I did bad my first 2 years, but I thought about it and decided writing about that wouldn't be good.

But, I have a decent idea for an essay that would not only fit the question but somewhat explain my situation and how I've changed for the better. I don't think it will make me look like I'm trying to make an excuse for my bad performances, but I guess you can never be too safe.

It depends. My DD’s essay is about something she wasn’t good at and then the essay talks about how she focused on that issue to excel. Everyone who has read it likes the tone of the essay.

My DS also did a similar thing. His was on facing his fears and I thought it was equally good.

The important thing is that it has to be unique to your situation. You should also ensure that the completed essay offers the person a window into you that makes them want to meet you and admit them to their university.

Good luck!
