So there's no way I'm getting into an Ivy, just not what they're looking for. But I fair decently competitive among the state schools. And my dream college is UDub (University of Washington).

But I feel like I'm setting myself up for an average life, working an average job, at an average company. And I just don't wanna be average.

So can I be successful, without the Ivy name?

You really can’t do anything if you don’t go to an Ivy. Even going to the Booth School of Business at Chicago or Kellogg School of Business at Northwestern… you’ll be lucky to land a 5 figure 9-5 job at best.

You can be successful, but you will have to work harder for it. The fact is, an Ivy diploma in a useful art (regardless of your class rank) will always lead to a quality starting job. Not only that, but it will gain you respect among your employer and co workers. It labels you as smart, capable, and ready to succeed. There is no denying that.

You can however, become just as successful with an ‘average’ school degree. Say you get an Economics degree from a state flagship. You will start off with an internship, or paid clerkship if you’re lucky. With effort and due time, you can SLOWLY advance to an economist working for a corporation by proving yourself.

An Economics degree from say, Columbia, however can land you that economist position right away if you’re a good interviewer.

Ivies = more success? Not exactly
Ivies = faster success? Absolutely

You actually have it backward, my friend. A degree from an Ivy League school is actually more DETRIMENTAL than it is helpful. Steer clear from HYP and the rest of them. Studies have shown that people with degrees from the Ivies have a harder time find jobs and getting into graduate schools.

For real guys, quit it with the sarcasm lol.

But those of you who answered seriously, thanks for your input :).

I wanna be a business (marketing) major you see, and I’m just worried as ****, that I won’t survive in the field without the Ivy name stamped onto my resume

Because when you read about the CEO or a majorly “up there” guy in a business, they all have degrees from a top 10 school, well most of them anyway.

And how can I compete in the field if I have a degree from a state school?

You can go to Harvard and Princeton but they have no business major. So why would you go there if you can’t study what you want?

It is not like you have much of choice. Were you planning to be this great person after coming out of undergrad? People work extremely hard for their success. It does nt come from a diploma from a specific undergrad college.
