Are JV sports looked down upon in college admissions?

Hi, I'm a sophomore and in JV softball...I'm not that great of an athlete but I really enjoy the sport. Hopefully I'll be in varsity in my senior year, which I doubt. So if I put down JV softball on my transcript, is it dismissed as an 'easier' sport that requires 'less commitment'?

it is not looked upon as highly as a varsity sport would, but it still shows that you are doing something..a varsity sport does usually have more commitment and shows you have excelled more in the sport..but JV sports is not looked down upon..jst not looked up as much as a varsity sport

Yes, it will be looked down upon. In fact all applications are looked down upon, unless they happen to be above the head level of the admissions office reader.

Haha. Thats was good for a laugh while waiting for my decision.

well, it shows dedication. it takes a lot more preserverance to stay in a sport you’re bad at

who the hell said he was bad at it?

Agreed…most schools have it so JV = 9th and 10th graders, Varsity = 11th and 12th…only the most exceptional players start for Varsity in 9th (like this one kid on our varsity basketball team, short and white but a sick pointguard).

If you’ve played your sport for more than one season, it will show commitment and determination regardless of the level. If you’ve done so and maintained good grades at the same time, it’s even better.

However, if you wanted to be recruited to play your sport in college, then it would make a difference. In that case, playing at the varsity level (and sometimes beyond, like on a competitive club or travel team as well) and having demonstrable talent, ability and a record of achievement would be necessary.

I wouldn’t think twice about listing your JV sport, it will help, not hurt you.

You should aim for varsity. There’s a reason why there is a JV and Varsity division, it’s so seperate the good kids and the great kids. It’s generally better to be in the latter group.

“it takes a lot more preserverance to stay in a sport you’re bad at”

HAHAHA wow that was funny
