I am a current sophomore and had an awful first semester. Due to personal reasons, I was unable to concentrate on my school work, resulting in bad grades. Before this happened, I was planning on attending a competitive college, but now I don't know if I still have a chance. I live in the state of Michigan, so I am hoping to go to the University of Michigan to get in state tuition. These are my grades so far.

Freshman Year
Honors Geometry - A (year long)
Honors English - A (year long)
Honors Biology - A (year long)

Sophomore Year
Honors Algebra II - A

Test Scores:

PSAT - 202
PLAN - 29, which they say equals to 30-33 on the ACT

I had no preparation for these tests and am planning on doing SAT prep over the summer so I will be a National Merit Scholar. I would appreciate any recommendations for the prep as I am unsure of what to do.

Extra Curriculars:

Tennis Team
Director of Volunteer Club for 2 years
Vice President of Latin Club
Over 100 hours community service
Section Editor of Newspaper, poised for Editor in Chief by Senior Year
I am in other clubs for fun but don't have any leadership roles in them

Over winter break I moved to Michigan from Kansas, and the semester just started at my school. The tennis season is in the spring rather than fall here, so I will play again. I am going to join any clubs that interest me so hopefully I will have a leadership role in the future. I have joined the Newspaper at my school, which is not as professional as at my school, and has only 10 people, whereas my old school had over 60 people on staff. I am also going to begin regularly volunteering at one specific place, but I'm not sure what to choose. There is a tutoring opportunity, an animal shelter, Habitat for Humanity, and a Child Abuse center. At the child abuse center I would probably do office work, but at the other ones I would do more labor type jobs.

I don't have a job but am planning on using my extra time at the volunteer place instead of getting one.

In the summer, I am planning on interning at a local newspaper, volunteering, and hopefully retaking my first semester English and if possible my first semester AP European History.

I know this was a lot to read and I appreciate you reading it. Please honestly tell me, do I have a chance at the University of Michigan if from now on I get mostly A's with a few B's?
