Are my chances that BAD? C.A.S.....R.D.

I am South Asian(Indian). I live in Houston, Texas. I wasn't getting a lot of responses in the "What are my chances Forum"?

G.P.A.- 3.8/4.0 (Unweighted) 93.8/100 (weighted)
Class Rank- Anywhere from TOP 15 PERCENT To TOP 19 PERCENT (I don't know for sure)------I KNOW THIS IS BAD...HOW MUCH OF A FACTOR Do YOU GUYS THINK IT IS? Look at my grades below and tell me if they are good enough.....My counselor did say in her rec, that at surrounding schools I would have been top 10 percent.....Do you guys think schools will see my rank, and my gpa, with my sat score and assume my school is compeitive, or will it hurt me a lot?

I'd say you have about a 35% chance of getting in, just because there is nothing outstanding besides grades, and CAS has a lot of those.

^^^ thats encouraging, because C.A.S.'s acceptance rate is 15 percent......

thanks philospher...

That number isn't comparable to the "acceptance rate".

Yeah, like what the philosopher says, the acceptance rates account for unqualified students who are applying just for the sake of it (like, REALLY unqualified).

For your case, I must say it's not TOO bad... although you don't have particularly outstanding grades or extra curricular activities, you're taking a lot of AP classes... so, hopefully CAS will recognize that you've challenged yourself (which is much better than a 4.0 with millions of PE classes).

I would say hope for the best... but you should definitely have other safety schools.

^^what is PE class? physical education?if it is,isnt the grades you get in this class not counted as part of your GPA?

Yeah, I meant Physical Education.
Frankly, I honestly don't know if PE grades are counted or not... some people say it's counted, some say it's not.
But the whole point is, core AP classes count much more than some elective courses (and your counselor should have put that on your rec)

thanks for the input guys....but yah...P.E. classes do count for gpa and class rank (mine is horrible)....and a.p. classes give u 1 extra point

I gotta B in P.E. because I can't run a mile in 8 minutes...The fastest I can run it in is 9 minutes so the coach gave me a b.....ROFL
^^Messed up thing is that p.e. counts for class rank and g.p.a., lol

Yeah, PE counts for my GPA and class rank, too, but Cornell might discount it (they recalculate your GPA anyway).

thats good that they recalculate gpa.....hopefully my bad class rank won't play a huge factor...

You have a chance. If you applied ED your chance would have doubled. However, RD there really isn't much to see here (NO OFFENSE INTENDED!!!) for Cornell. You have great grades and SATs but the extracurriculars dont make you stand out too terribly well. I think 40% and not a percent more.

GOOD LUCK THOUGH!!! I wish you all the best. Just make sure you get some safety school applications in as well. Don't hope for only Ivy league, theres always transfer!

It's ur essays that count.

make them golden

^^^ Thanks for the input guys....

I wish I could get in, but is riduclous, 15,000 applications to C.A.S., and only 2,000 acceptances, that means I am going to be one of the 13,000 that gets rejected....

Already got rejected from Rice, E.D.....

bump....................

It is a case of large numbers seeking to fit in a limited space.

exactly, lots of qualified applicants, what are the chances they'd want me?

My Sat scores seem weak for C.A.S.

They might appear weak, but they actually fall in the top half of those admitted. You aren't a lock, but you have a great chance.

Out of curiosity, where did you come up the acceptance rate for CAS?

where are teh sat IIs? those are majorly important .

Oh sorry, these my are sats 2....(man the people on this ivy league forum are a lot nicer/more helpful, than the ones on the other ivy league forum, I just get chewed out there lol)

Math 1-730
U.S. History-750

I got the acceptance rates by divding the kids that applied to C.A.S. from the ones that were accepted....I saw 2,000 acceptances from 15,000 applicants.....(makes sense because cornell has 30,000 applicants)....
^^^ Some cornell publication, idk exactly where I saw these stats....

How much is a horrible class rank going to be a factor?

Have you decided what you are going to study there, or mentioned a specific interest? Cause the essay is the only thing you can basically control, and if you mention an interesting choice of a major, and if CAS has the right resources, then you should be able to fit. You are going to have one extra thing to explain, and that is explaining why you didn't do ED.
