Does your school offer AP classes? Being competitive transcript-wise for elite schools requires that you (a) take the most rigorous classes available to you and (b) do well in them. A couple of B’s won’t kill you of course, but the fact that there will always be plenty of kids taking full AP courseloads and managing to maintain 4.0 GPAs as well as participating in outstanding extracurricular activities means that getting in to top colleges is more difficult these days.

No one can honestly answer this Slushy. Grades are looked at in the context of your school. So we’d need to know your rank and relative course rigor. If you’ve taken only the hardest classes and you are number 1 or 2, you’re on track grade wise for Harvard.

That said, about 60% of those applying to Harvard are on track grade wise but they only accept 6%. and half of admits are athletes, legacies, children of famous people and rich donors. So the real admit rate is so tiny that even if you have perfect grades and scores your chance of getting into Harvard is unbelievably small.

The good news is with Harvard like grades and scores, you’ll have your choice of 99% of colleges!
