I am in 7th grade (12 years old) and I took the SAT for a talent search. I got 690 on M, 590 on CR, and 660 on W (8 Essay). Is this good? How does this compare to other kids my age? I want to go to the Ivy League, should I abandon all hope? I get all A’s in school. Thank you so much.
Are you really wondering? Look up the % for 12 year olds on the SAT College Board site. They have the information under research.
Those are very good scores for 7th grade. You are on the right track. Those scores are higher than the average for college-bound students in high school. Your scores will naturally increase. Take the SAT again next year, and the PSAT as many times as you can in high school to continue getting practice and seeing where you stand.
You’ll want to work on the math score. The best way is to get regular tutoring over time through an organization like Kumon or Enopi or something similar – that is what students in Asia, as well as many Asian students in the U.S., do for years to be able to excel on standardized tests. It is also what my daughter did off and on, and her scores wound up in the 99th percentile, with admission to an Ivy and big scholarship offers elsewhere (she chose the scholarships).
In addition to test scores, colleges will look at whether you took the most challenging courses available to you in high school, and your class rank or percentile. From here on, take advantage of chances to take as many high level classes as you can handle. Good luck!
@jetc88 Why are you thinking about college in 7th grade? Go out and do something you love - don’t hang out on this site, it will kill your spirit and is a huge waste of time at this point.

Those are very good scores
My D had similar scores in 7th grade, maybe a little higher on the math but very close to those as I recall. She won some awards, including getting to take some college level classes at a local university. She then scored 2330 in her first and only sitting for the test in 11th grade without any test prep classes at all. Starting about 3 months before the test she subscribed to the “question of the day” email the SAT people send out. That was it. I am sure you will be fine as well.
I have no idea why the person above said you need to work on the math score. 690 is 99th percentile and is tremendous. I imagine she meant CR (which is still 95th percentile!!), but that will rise very naturally as you read heavily throughout the next 4 years. My guess is you will do fine without paying for test prep, but to each their own.
Personally I think it is good that you are thinking about college already, but I also agree with the sentiment in the message by SuzyQ7. Don’t overdo thinking about it, just get involved in fun things, charitable things (which are not different necessarily), etc. Be a normal kid and you will have plenty to offer any college in the country, no doubt.
