are people happy at berkeley?

I agree that you should be good in a subject in order to earn an A. But the problem with curves is that there is usually a predetermined number of A’s that the professor will give out. This means that if there are many students who are very proficient in the subject, then a student with an A in the class might be bumped down to a B because of the curve. Could this be the main reason that causes unhappiness in Berkeley students?

Maybe what I’m not happy about is how much people like to complain here… Personally I love Berkeley. Sure, I’m being grilled right now with my 20-unit schedule, but I’m genuinely happy; I like what I’m learning and I like my classes (well, except for one). Sure, I’m worried sick about my grades, but then again, I don’t know about the rest of you, I didn’t come Berkeley for a good GPA… so I guess if you are premed you are screwed, but otherwise you should be ok.

I think our DC food is decent, better than most, if not all the UCs. I like the people here. Maybe you guys are just not hanging around the right crowd but the people I associate myself with are very genuine, fun and kind. I love the fact that there are always so many opportunity to hear from great scholars and leaders (Nobel prize winners, pulitzer prize winners, former president of US) and I love the fact that I’m helped by brilliant graduate students and taught by even more brilliant professors, even though the classes tend to be too large for my taste (you get what you paid for. I mean UC tuition is a lot cheaper than privates. For me, larger classes/ hard to get into classes is a fair tradeoff)

Sure there are lots of negatives, but why not focus more on the positives? I love this place even though it gives me a lot of ****.

This poster has the right to say there are wonderful people at Berkeley, because she is one of them.

Awww thank you mathboy! Hope you are doing well :)

That was some badass CC love right there! :)

Like any other place, you can be happy at Berkeley, but you can also choose to be miserable. Do what you like and you’ll be happy. I mean, I’m up at 4:00 trying to debug extremely dense C, but I realized about 45 mins ago that even with a destructive combination of classes, I’m pretty happy doing what I’m doing.

I really have to add to the bit of optimism from the last few posts -

If you’re a human being, you probably enjoy doing something. There are over 25,000 undergrads here. Thus, the chance of there being someone else who enjoys doing that one thing is fairly high. Chances are that you enjoy doing more than one thing. Get involved!

I was just talking to a friend who is a high school senior. She’s a bit hesitant about coming here because she’s scared of getting lost in the crowd. I told her that while it’s natural to be concerned about it, I feel like the size can be an asset at times - there are SO many amazingly friendly, intelligent, genuine, and interesting people here that the surly, boring ones that you do meet won’t really matter. If you don’t like the people you don’t get along with, don’t hang out with them.

Inconnu, I know exactly what you’re talking about. I just finished doing a sociology essay when I realized how much I actually enjoyed doing that. And now that’s transferred over to some enthusiasm about Cal :)

Sometimes I just get random moments of intense Berkeley love <3

My DD and her friends love Cal.
Do they love everything about Cal… well NO. But overall, it is a great school.

Oh god, please don’t use those obnoxious DEAR DAUGHTER acronyms.

when did it become dd? I always thought it was a plain d. Is the internet age moving faster than me now? NOOOOOO…
I’m gonna add a bit of negativity. I hate this weather. And the riots. Lulz. Good job. Let’s keep up with our useless protests and convince ourselves that we are “changing” Sacramento politicians.

i hate the people of Berkeley. the students are bearable (barely) but the actual residents make the whole experience awful.

think of another top 20 school that is in such a shi*ty neighborhood.

I don’t understand why the homeless population stays at Berkeley. Do they actually think college kids have money to spare?

Schools are usually built where land is cheap…UChic is in the ghetto. UPenn, too.

Students are “bearable (barely)”??? who do you think you are?

I get that you’re probably in a lot of huge math/science courses where most people around you are “fobby”/look like they only care about grades, but that is NOT the majority of people here. I’m probably in a lot of the same classes as you but I have a great group of friends (most of whom I met through dorms) and I love it here at Berkeley. Almost everyone I know does too.

Just because you have a bad attitude and have failed at making friends here does not make it ok for you to claim that the people are unbearable. You’re making the whole school seem to be a terrible place and intimidating high school kids with all your repetitive posts dominating every thread on this forum. KEEP YOUR PESSIMISM TO YOURSELF.

Your rays of sunshine do not affect my shades of night yo. People can be unbearable here. Half the time it is about making good grades and the other half is like OMG PARTY…FRAT THIS SORORITY INVITES!!! And then there’s the activists and the clubs people. Face meet palm. Just because you think Berkeley fits you does not mean it fits everyone. And really, the hobos and the people here…I get high school kids asking me for money to buy cigs and hobos stopping/stalking me straight up asking for 20 dollars. Absolutely wonderful.

Okay it’s not like I don’t get annoyed by anything here, I do my share of complaining about the activists and business club representatives. It just doesn’t affect me enough to believe I would be happier elsewhere and think that Berkeley is an inferior school.

“Just because you think Berkeley fits you does not mean it fits everyone”

I know that. I understand that it does not fit you and some others on this thread. Claiming that people are unbearable, overwhelmingly pointing out only the negatives, and intentionally implying that new students would be miserable at Berkeley advocates the inverse of that statement does it not? Just because you don’t think Berkeley fits you does not mean it doesn’t fit everyone.

I have no problem with people stating what some negative parts of Berkeley are. It’s just that you all do it so overwhelmingly and dominate this forum. Berkeley’s reputation for high school kids and the CC community should not be shaped entirely by a few bitter and pessimistic kids.

And I see you edited your post to delete that line i just quoted. Good job.

Actually, it’s still there…lulz. What I’m saying is merely what I am saying. I’m not telling students not to come here. It’s just my point of view; whether those HS kids want to believe me is up to them. Some kids are down to earth and pretty cool (my last year’s floormates were all pretty chill guys). But living in the units with more people on a floor this year… well you get to see a diversity of kids and I’ve realized that kids here can be pretty fake. They all have this facade of oh I’m really nice, but then start trash-talking as soon as you’re gone. (It’s laughable what some people will say out loud and think I can’t hear them because I have headphones on. Like really now…) And then you have those people who just want to utilize your resources and connections and bail as soon as the have what they want. Can’t forget wannabes and suck-ups either. I think sometimes, this is just like HS Pt 2, where school work is much harder and everything else stays the same.
On the other hand, you’re accusing someone of failing to make friends, which I just thought was a bit of a stretch. I mean, why is that always the case for someone who doesn’t like the people here?

Oh edit: what I edited was lovely to absolutely wonderful in the end if you were ever so curious. hahaha

There is a vast discrepancy between the average Berkeley student, and the average Berkeley student you see on this forum.

The average Berkeley student is easy to get along with. Before classes starts, I occasionally find myself with new people. Usually it’s pretty easy to get a conversation going, and if someone were to listen in at the end of class, I doubt they would be able to tell if we had just met or if we were old friends.

The average Berkeley student on this forum is whiny, vapid and arrogant. I’m worried that prospective Berkeley students will be turned off when reading this forum.

I don’r see why you have problems with the homeless and/or people asking for money in general, Batman…Next time, you should just glare at them straight in the face and say, “I’m the godda.mn Batman” in the raspy throat cancer voice (refer: [YouTube - The Dark Knight- Joker Interrogation Scene Spoof](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2yv8aT0UFc)).

But . . . Bruce Wayne doesn’t glare at the beggars and hobos, he goes home and dons the costume before doing the raspy voice thing. We can’t expect Batman17 to expose his cover identity, can we?

What happens at night when a mysterious shape is seen flitting from the roof of Bowles to drop into Peoples Park and exact vengeance, well, that is never spoken of, except in trauma centers and mortuaries around the east bay.

i bet the op posted this and never came back
