^lots of movie theaters and there’s the westwood village shopping district too (some pretty cool shops and restaurants there imo).

how about the city of berkeley? what do you like to do there?

There is a club literally half a block away from were I live (Electro Pop Rock on Wednesdays!). Dozens of pot sellers within a 3 block radius. Hella movie theaters, but really I don’t go to the movies unless I’m REALLY bored. SF from BART or free if you take AC, but it may take a bit longer. Berkeley Rep (American Idiots musical opened their) and literally hundreds of restaurants represented by dozens of different nations. Just on my BLOCK there is House of Curries, Panchos, Gypsies, King Pin, Lotus House, I.B., Cafe Durant, Thai Basil and other places that I have yet to try.

ah k see none of that sounds appealing to me besides the restaurants and movie theaters but they obviously have those in westwood! lol. well, sf would be cool but so is la, so the two cities (berkeley and westwood) don’t seem so different to me quite yet.

^ The difference between Berkeley and Westwood is Berkeley is a college town. A pedestrian oriented college town. Activities are central to campus…football is played on campus, not 20 miles away.

Westwood is a gentrified suburb of a megalopolis.

Growing up in LA, I found Berkeley very refreshing…SF was a great escape. You don’t need a car and can get around very easily to the Oakland Airport via BART.
Berkeley and the SF Bay Area have a more intellectual vibe than LA…just watch the local news of both and compare…haha.

That said, Berkeley isn’t for everyone. The environment can be kind of overwhelming and walking down Telegraph can be shocking. But I warmed up to it and look back at my time at Berkeley as some of the best years of my life.

People who have an inferiority complex usually are the ones who’re underachieving at the school and need the prestige of the school to carry them. Those who milk out a school like LA will certainly be achieving way more than most people at Berkeley.

…i could use some King Pin doughnuts right about now

From what I understand, UCLA will be moving up in the rankings in the coming 10 years (probably will surpass Cal in the next 20). Going to either school is a great investment in our future and hopefully we all have high enough self esteem so that we don’t have to bash the prestige of other universities.

I’m a freshman too, and so far I’m enjoying Cal. So to put it short - yes, I’m happy.

But I have one major complain:

Harsh Curves - I’m in a class right now that hands out 10% As only. And that means no matter how hard I work there is always the possibility that i can’t make it to the top 10 percent because someone else is smarter and/or worked harder. And it’s the same for almost all undergrad weeder classes. I have academic ambitions so i need to keep a good GPA. So right now I’m REALLY having to work for my grades.

And the worst part is all that effort isn’t even going to be rewarded. Because when it comes to graduate school admission they’ll look at my grades in the same light as someone who applied from a private school with significant grade inflation. I think that’s really unfair.

Most Cal people are very happy.

2 years ago, but I’m sure statistics aren’t exactly dipping to an all-time low in this economy.

I used to live in Westwood the past two years before I came to Berkeley (I didn’t transfer from UCLA but lived right next to it with other UCLA students)
I gotta say that I am absolutely not happy here. With “not happy” being an understatement I seriously considered getting counseling at some point but then I didn’t have time because I had too many things on my TODO list…

Well, the school is great. I like my classes and I think there are tons of opportunities here (I am an EECS major, not sure about others). Yes, curves and grading may be harsh, but that doesn’t bother me too much. Academically I am pretty happy, it’s just as I expected it to be. The campus is beautiful as well.

However, I hate the city. Whoever said that Berkeley and Westwood seem to be “similar”, nope, 100% different. After living in Westwood, to me Berkeley is just a ghetto full of homeless and pot-smoking hippies (nothing against you, but that’s not the crowd i want to hang out with, if you do, come here). There are almost NO good food places here. Yes, it’s cheap and everything but the quality is as well. Food in LA seems “real”, Berkeley fake. If you like healthy food, Asian food or international food, have fun finding something “real” here. If you can live on Hot Dogs, pizza and Donuts then Berkeley food is not too bad though.

Yes, SF is nice. The only problem is that I don’t have time to go there! In this semester I’ve been to SF maybe 5-6 times. I really don’t wanna spend 2-3h every day just for getting good food in SF because I need that time to study. SF may be prettier but it doesn’t come close to what LA has to offer in terms of entertainment, food and diversity. I’d probably be happier if I lived in SF, but the commute is not worth it.

I also have problems finding people to hang out with here. I never had any problems finding friends in LA, but people here are totally different.
That might also have to do with the fact that I am transfer student + international. And since my major requires a lot of studying I didn’t have time to go to clubs anymore after a little into the semester. I hope that situation is gonna change soon, at least I can do something about it. Anyway, I feel that it’s gonna be extremely hard to find people I can be close to here.

There’s nothing I can do about the “city” of Berkeley, unfortunately
I can’t wait to go back to LA <3

“I never had any problems finding friends in LA, but people here are totally different.”

could you elaborate at all? in what ways did you find them very different?

um the meeting new people/ making friends experience is going to be VERY different for a freshman living with other new freshmen in dorms than for a junior transfer.

I can’t speak from personal experience but I have a friend that went to Berkley. She liked the school and the area enough to stay there. :)

I don’t know why an experience should be different. We’re all people. A junior transfer is only like 1-2 years older than a freshman.

The thing is, going in as a freshman nobody knows anybody, so you’re not alone in trying to make friends. As a transfer student, you’re trying to insert yourself into a social scene that’s already been established, and you don’t even know anyone who could introduce you.

^ There is a transfer student dorm…I’d recommend staying there the first year.

“just curious…why would they commend ucla in that case? ucla, while not as extremely liberal as berkeley, is still very liberal and la as a city is…:-/”

They commend UCLA because UCLA doesn’t have the sort of image that Berkeley has as a ‘hardcore liberal and potsmoking school’. That’s a direct quote from a friend’s mother. Looking back into Berkeley’s history, it’s not exactly pristine and the neighborhood does nothing to reinforce the thought. UCLA, while not much different, doesn’t hold that image. When a person thinks of UCLA, the first thing that usually comes to mind is either LA itself (which is nothing to boast about, but at least the hobos are concentrated south so if you go to UCLA you’ll never see them) or the suburb-in-a-city Westwood.

Hm, maybe I should correct myself: they don’t so much commend as much as they prefer UCLA over Berkeley, haha. At least, that’s my personal experience so don’t take it to heart of course.

“i dunno if your post was in reply to this thread as a whole or to the recent ucla/berkeley discussion, but if it’s the latter, you can walk around westwood too, right? that’s what i’ve heard, at least.”

It was a bit of both, to be honest. You can definately walk around, but as UCBChemEGrad said best, activities and whatnot are centered around campus so you can walk to get to most places. For anyone who lived in LA, where you can’t get around by foot to go nearly anywhere, it’s really refreshing and gives a sense of freedom. I didn’t ride a car for three months while I was in Berkeley and the last time I ever did so was when I went back to LA for Thanksgiving Break. I don’t have that great a memory of what UCLA had to offer nearby, so I admit my words are biased there.

“by downtown la, do you mean the area near usc? or are you talking about westwood? (sorry i’m just not sure if you were comparing ucb and ucla or not!! :P)”

Oh I meant the area near USC of course – and even then that’s kind of inaccurate. I just made the comparison offhandedly because when people complain about Berkeley hobos, I automatically think that they’re not that horrible compared to some of the ones in Downtown. In retrospect, that adds little to the discussion so I apologize for that.

@CCnewbie
Gah, graduate school! I feel a deep coldness spread in the pit of my stomach every time I think about what that one senior said… “If you wanted to go to grad school at Cal, you should’ve gone to a crappy college, aced everything, and transferred here.” If only being a Berkeley student counted for something, sigh.

@Thomas_
Ouch, of course going from Westwood to Berkeley would be a culture shock. Think of going to Berkeley as exploring the rest of what LA really is like : )

Erm, I don’t really know what you mean by “real”, though. There’re so many small businesses here, I don’t see how you couldn’t find one that suits your tastes. I’ve been through the bigger parts of Westwood enough since I went to high school there, but I can hardly find rehashed franchise food lining the streets and plazas as “real”… Central/East LA I can somewhat understand since there’re so many restaurants run by townspeople, but… If you want good Asian food, check out the Asian ghetto or Thai House? International food-wise, there’s quite a few down University Ave. and whatnot, no? I have an unhealthy affection for La Burrita so I’ll refrain commenting there. Healthy food… Jesus, they treat us like rabbits in Berkeley :P! What I would do to find a franchise near the campus that isn’t a Subway.

No real food? Wteff? The Bay Area is famous for the wide variety of authentic ethnic foods! You just gotta know where to look. I recommend Yelping (yelp.com) :). Obviously you’re not going to find that quality of food on Telegraph!

You can meet people in all types of situations. I’m a freshman and I live by myself because I’m from the area and decided I didn’t want to dorm. I still met loads of people this semester through clubs and the friends I already knew. Someone else I know came here w/o knowing anyone and is commuting from Alameda every day, and she has plenty of friends! You just gotta be sociableeee. Don’t expect people to just come up to you.

Anyways, I effin’ <3 Berkeley. Parties during the first week of semester were AWESOME. Bonfire Rally was AWESOME :D.

lol i hate cal. im dropping out next semester to go to a community college where im going to transfer to ucla.

SWHarborfan: When has a 97% in physics ever yielded a B+? Which physics class is this?! That is pretty ridiculous considering all the physics classes I’ve ever taken (7 series) had around a 65/100 average on tests.
