Are SAT scores the only thing that matters?

I know that GPA, class rank, ECs, etc are all supposed to be "just as important" as SAT scores. But I'm starting to wonder! My friend has twins... all their ECs, community service, essay quality, etc are basically identical, except:

Child 1: Okay GPA, rotten SAT
Child 2: Much lower GPA, slightly higher SAT

Yet Child 2 has been accepted to several schools while Child 1 hasn't been accepted to any. It seems like all they even looked at was the SAT. I'm getting a little worried. My own D has great GPA and class rank (top 1%), but her SATs are toward the bottom of the some of schools she's aiming for. Does she even have a chance?

Yes of course. SATs are definitely not the only thing that matters. They are extremely important but not the only thing that matters.

It depends on the schools. Look at their Common Data Sets, section C7, to see how each element is weighted in admissions.
