S1 is a Junior. Talking to parents of Seniors, most of their kids did NOT take SAT2s, as they said only top tier schools want them. He is looking at mostly engineering schools in the Northeast and his current top 5 choices don't require them.

Should he bother to take Chem & Math 2 in May, right after the AP exams? or is this a waste of money?

He should give it a try. First, many schools recommend, although not require, SAT2 scores. Good SAT2 scores would give him an edge. Second, it is not expensive and only take one hour per subject. If he is taking AP, it may just take a weekend to prepare. Third, you may request 4 free score reports which include all previous SAT1/2 scores that it is cheaper to take the SAT2 than ordering 4 score reports separately. Fourth, even the schools do not require SAT2 for admission, they may consider it for placement or merit scholarship evaluation. Fifth, why do you want to limit the choice of schools? The best time to take it is in June of Junior year (or sophomore). Many students regret not taking SAT2 later on and there is no time machine to correct that mistake.

AS more and more kids are being home schooled today, the SAT II’s relevance is increasing. As billcsho said, why would you limit your son’s choices? He should apply to top schools too, and no it’s not a waste of money, each test costs $11-12 and requires a time investment of 1 hr only.
