My son took four AP classes last year and is taking five this year. He passed all of last year's AP's with one 4 and three 5's. I have no reason to think this year will be different.

The question I have is this: is it really necessary for him to take the SAT subject tests if he is taking AP classes and passing those exams with flying colors? Also, he took the SAT in June and scored a 2320.

It just seems to me that the SAT subject tests are redundant for what he's already done.

some colleges like the HYPS, require SAT subject tests...

Yes. Schools that require SAT Subject tests use them for admission decisions. AP scores are usually self-reported on the appication and are sent to the colleges later and used for credit or placement. What your son should do, however, is to sit for the SAT Subject test about the same time as his AP exam(s) so that the material is still fresh. If he AP tested last spring in Bio or US History and did well, then he might want to take the SAT II in those subjects now (if he didn't already) - otherwise, it will mean restudying the material later.

Yes, some schools require SAT Subject tests. AP scores do play a role in college admissions, but they are primarily used to get credit or placement after getting into college.
