Are taking these 2 classes over the summer during vacation too much?

I registered for 2 elective classes over this summer at my community college so I can transfer them to my 4 year university. Both of these classes are 100% online based. One of the classes is a history class and the other is a literature class. They are considered college level classes. The classes have a time frame of 7 weeks (June-July). Now the problem is, I will be on vacation for the whole summer out of the country visiting family and friends. when I was talking to some of the teachers at the CC they said taking 6 credits is equivalent of a full time job for those 7 weeks. I have never taken summer classes before. How much time would I need to invest a day to study and get at least a B in both classes? Reading and writing is not my speciality but since this is for credits I will work hard. I have free-time during vacation but is it really considered a full time job? Should i maybe pre-read the books so I am more prepared?

Definitely read and look over the material, but I would say you should be fine as long as you don’t blow off the classes and you should be prepared to invest some time of memorizing and doing homework like a few hours or so a day. Other than that you’ll be just fine!

“Vacation” and “taking classes” are two different things. While I salute your effort to build up credits, this might not be the best way to do it.

Are you willing to tell the family and friends that you are visiting that you will be unavailable for 3-4 hours every day in order to complete your classes?

If you are out of the country, then there will be a time zone difference that could create a challenge - online classes typically have firm deadlines for handing in materials (think 11:59 PM Eastern Daylight Time and then figure out what time it will be where you are).

Do your hosts have fast and reliable internet service, and are they willing to let you monopolize it?

Have you ever taken an online class? Many people find them more difficult than on-the-ground classes.

I have taken online classes. I live overseas and it was a convenient and only way to take classes that I needed for recertification. It was time consuming, but I did each one while also working full time, and a couple of them spanned week long vacations so I had to take my school work with me.

I wouldn’t recommend taking two at the same time if you aren’t strong at writing and if you want to have some time to have fun on your vacation. However, one is probably doable. Because it’s online, classes tend to be writing heavy. The online classes I took required a lot of reading. I had to post responses to prompts based on the reading (minimum 1 to 2 pages plus references depending on the course) twice per week, respond to at least two classmates posts each time, plus there was a bigger project that had components due every couple of weeks culminating in a final paper. You had to post on specific days by a certain time so you constantly need be aware of the due dates and times. You have to be motivated to do this type of learning. I enjoyed it quite a lot and I learned a lot.
