still accepting applications (for fall 2011)? or any that have semesters beginning in janruary 2012? Oh and can you also tell me how well regarded they are if there are any? if I must wait till fall 2012 to go to college I guess I will have to (because I think I missed the deadlines for most music colleges) but I'd like to know if I still have any opportunities?

The top tier schools are definitely done with the audition process by now. So you will be looking at colleges that are not at the top. However, some smaller schools such as the College of St Rose still have auditions available. St Rose has an audition on 4/16. You could check your local community colleges. In NY, there are two that offer music degrees. The one in Schenectady has a good rep and has many students transfer to good programs ie Berklee and the state 4 yr programs. Otherwise you could try a gap year and work on general ed courses at a community college near you and sing in a good local chorus while taking private lessons.

Schools that I researched on (because I’m searching for the same thing) are SUNY Fredonia, Buffalo State College, Bethany, and Simpson College. I know that Fredonia has a great music program; I’m not sure about the others. Fredonia has an audition on the 26th, so if you’re interested you need to fax them the audition request form ASAP. You can also look at community colleges. Most community colleges have a music program. You can spend a year there then transfer.
Good Luck!

If you are classical voice, my answer may not help. If you are jazz or contemporary, schools like Berklee in Boston have auditions for Fall (you’re too late for that for 2011) or Spring 2012. The deadline is around July 1st and your audition would be in July or early August for a January 2012 start.

Thank you all very much! lots of information. I think for my next step I am going to send in an audition request form for fredonia and also an application for Berklee spring.

I’m auditioning at Fredonia on the 26th too. The forms were due at the beginning of the month, but I’m sure if there are still some openings, they’ll fit you in!

Are you ready for an audition? Have you reviewed the audition requirements of those schools?
Fredonia:
Perform three memorized selections (four if auditioning for Performance or Music Education) chosen from the standard classical vocal literature. The selections must include at least two languages and contrasting styles. Note: musical theatre, jazz, or other styles are not acceptable.

Berkelee:
Prepared Piece: Berklee embraces and values all music styles so you should prepare a piece that you are comfortable with and displays your strengths as a musician. It should be approximately 3-5 minutes in length, in any style, which demonstrates your instrumental proficiency and your overall musicianship.
Here are some examples and additional guidelines that may help when selecting your prepared piece:

•A tune from a well-known artist or band (any style)
•A standard or jazz tune (which may include blues and rhythm changes) with your own improvisation
•A composition from the instrumental/voice repertoire or an aria or musical theater selection
•A transcription of a well-known artist’s solo
Improvisation: We would like to hear you improvise over a short progression to gauge where you are in your instrumental development
Blues: You should be prepared to play over a standard I-IV-V blues progression.

They are rather different. What type of singing do you do?

Be careful with Fredonia if you want music grant money:

From the Fredonia Auditions page:

"The deadline has passed for all the audition dates, but we may still be able to schedule you for an audition on March 26. If you are interested in doing so, contact music@fredonia.edu and specify your instrument and curriculum interest. We will get back to you and try to work it out.

(Note: applicants for undergraduate admission who wish to be considered for music scholarships should audition no later than February 26, 2011.)”

Good luck !!

To singersmom07 my style of singing is more so pop/r&b so I’m guessing berklee may be a good choice for me. But I’m willing to consider many schools if they have a good reputation because even though i’m into more into modern/popular singing, I do find different styles of music and singing to be interesting so essentially I would be going to that college to gravitate into that type of singing. I will be sending an application for berklee spring this week, thanks for all the replies (and keep replying if you have more info)

I know this situation is never ideal. But, if there is a university that you where accepted academically you could attend there as an undecided major and take some music classes and then transfer into the Spring Semester and not be that behind. That would be if you contacted a private instructor there and inquired about getting private lessons and the price. Though this only really works for traditional colleges/universities and not conservatories.

Sagiter is right about any aid. FASFA at most colleges has a deadline of March 1.
