"Summer you are not a minority...you are only PART hispanic. i know a kid who is part mexican part white. The reason why these kids are smart is because that they are not your traditional "mexican". I am not trying to be racist here."

Hmm, well I'm glad you're not TRYING to be racist. Colleges allow individuals who are at least 1/4 of a particular race to identify with that race. They are aware that there are some individuals who are what they call "mixed." I am half mexican, half white and I am not smart because I am not a traditional "mexican." Must I carry around a crate of oranges and speak in my native tongue to meet your prejudices of what a "Mexican" truly is? I'm deeply upset that I do not meet your qualifications. What has made my application stand out among the rest is not my hispanic background, but the struggles I have faced because of my WHITE mother. My Mexican father is college educated and my white mother is not (she didn't even graduate high school). In addition, I am my high school valedictorian. I currently have a 5.0 GPA. I am the Debate Team Captain, President of my class, President of my National Honor Society, a Student Court Presiding Justice etc. at my school. I have applied to Stanford, Cornell, U Penn, and other highly selective institutions. I expect to be accepted later this month - not because I am Mexican, but because I can bring something individually, (not racially or ethnically) to those colleges. I am sure that your unintentionally prejudiced self will find a way to some college or other. Not because you are worthy, but because you will fulfill the ignorant, unintelligent sector of the student body.

heh, thats pretty damn evil, the stuff sorspanky has said. i haven't met a person with this extreme of racial ideology. for what it's worth, lets not take things so seriously online. big whoop if someone has strong ideals against you-- you'll never see this person in real life anyway. his first comment was probably made on a whim and felt encouraged to spread more racism when the half spanish girl verbalized her anger.

i always think its interesting to discuss these kinds of matters, and to run into a mind like this one is truly an elusive opportunity to delve into the brain of a real racist!... but like i said, it's better not to take things seriously online.

First of all, remarks that mock race serve no **ing purpose at all. Especially to people that take it the wrong way only to arouse more pointless conversation. Stupid arguments between people you'll never care to meet that don't accomplish anything but worsen feelings just serve no point to CC. You're part this race, half that, 1/4 this... okay, who really cares. People don't have freaking control over their nationality- it's how they were born and then people have to get all arrogant with each other on something stupid like this. If people weren't so stupid to make "jokes" like "whisper (this sort of valedictorian doesn't exist) whisper" - knowing other people will it take the wrong way, then none of this would happen. But then again, that's what balances the more ignorant part-racist kids from the better ones that aren't. I've just seen way too much of this type of racial stuff on CC and I'm wondering why people just don't get it..

sigh.... people like sorspanky are trolls who like to get attention, and he wants people to argue with him. He has a histrionic disorder because he was raised by a pack of wolves....
anyways, shout out to the rest of the Hispanics out there!! not val.. but top 10%

BLY, they said he was autistic because of his inability to focus and his lack of response to stimulae like being addressed, etc. Turn out he might have become autistic had a doctor not intervened.

I'm a hispanic female, valedictorian and my EC's aren't too shabby. I already have a likely letter from Yale...so, maybe we're not all idiots? wink

I am Dominican (Hispanic...100 %).....accepted by MIT, Carnegie Mellon, and Northwestern.

There is a correlation between nurture and education....and IQ.....Asians and WHITES have stronger family units....Education is emphasized more in these families....This leads to more well educated whites and Asians....when compared to Hispanic. Hispanics are known for having weaker families ..but there are exceptions I am not one

Although they are not a separate race.....Jews have the highest average IQ range.... (115-120) this doesnt take into consideration distribution .

OH the most racist bas+ar6s I know are white .go figure .lol

Im a Hispanic Salutatorian, and I agree that Hispanic Valedictorians are extremely rare. It has been my experience that the vast majority of Hispanics that have been in my Honors/Gifted/AP courses have all been white/Asian Hispanics, not brown mestizos like myself. (I have come into contact with several Latinos with Asian roots, mostly Colombian and Peruvian.) In addition to this group are the Hispanics that have one white non-Hispanic parent they are white by all means, but they check the Hispanic box for a leg up. These are the people that milk affirmative action and create false diversity at various colleges across the nation.

The same can be said with blacks, with a large amount being either immigrants from Jamaica/Haiti/Trinidad/Nigeria/whatever (in which case they are not even black, but International students) or mixed.

I have a friend that was admitted to a college with SAT scores barely touching the middle 50 percent, but since he was one-quarter Hispanic, he was able to check off that box, guaranteeing himself a spot. (Even his grandmother came from a wealthy Mexican family with Spanish roots, blonde and everything.) After all, his SAT scores were well above the Hispanic average, and as a Hispanic, he was among the high scorers. (Im talking about ~1100, here.)

It would be interesting to see statistics from the National Achievement/National Hispanic Scholar awards. I would like to see how many are actually black and Hispanic, and not mixed.

Im not saying that those who are mixed arent true blacks and Hispanics, and it may be so that they identify with the groups, but more often than not, they tend to score higher than their respective groups resulting in several posts around CC like URM Chances!!!! with impressive stats, but then we discover the person is half white or something.

To conclude: Yes, I do believe Hispanic Valedictorians with amazing ECs are extremely rare but they do exist.

FindFishFast I agree with most of what you said. Although the val at my school is Hispanic (Puerto Rican) who came when she was like 8. She also has great ECs. I have to disagree on your comment that African/Caribbean immigrants are not black. IMO they are just as or maybe even more "black" than the black Americans here-who in the distant, distant past probably had a white ancestor.

taking out huge megaphone
Race doesn't matter in education. Culture (as in family support of education) is what causes hispanics and africans to have less SAT scores and such*

not hispanic...but a person with feelings...my sense is that applicants get accepted-and- rejected for any number of reasons. It sounds like you have worked hard to be considered-you have earned the right to ask-apply-now its out of your hands---remember---you are an asset for whatever school YOU CHOOSE to attend!

Hey, I'm from Texas, and we have three high schools in my town. At least every other year one or more of the vals/sals is Hispanic. Texas itself is a minority MAJORITY state, and I can't stand to listen to people who assume that there are fewer hispanic vals 'not because of their race but because of their 'culture,' that their families don't support education.' I don't mean to diss you mr_chipset but if you tag 'hispanic' and 'african' onto the word 'culture' then you are bringing up race. I understand that lack of support in the home creates problems in school, but this is true whether you're black, white, Mexican, Indian, Asian, green, or rainbow. Regarding the admissions issue, I think they should just leave it off. If you want to talk about your race and its impact on you in your essay, more power to you. But a form of racism is inherent in the system, because you could be Hispanic and live in a mansion or Hispanic and live poorly, just like any other race. Everone should be on equal ground, and then if you've overcome challenges, shout it from a megaphone from the rooftops so the admissions staff can hear, don't check a box.

To answer to the OP, I believe that such individuals definitely exist (like you, for one), and I also believe that there are quite a few of them.

To anyone who ever had one doubt about my argument that discrimination against Asians is tolerated but discrimination against Hispanics is not, review the first page.
