Do we get the surplus or does it just go directly to Penn?

Workstudy isn’t a grant or a scholarship. It’s a program that is supplemented by the gov. or the school so that employers can afford to hire students. You have to actually apply and get a workstudy job. The pay is paid to you and it can be used for whatever you wish to use it on. I believe scholarships will only reduce workstudy if you ask…otherwise it reduces other aid that you get. You are welcome to take out a loan instead of workstudy, but it will be unsubsidized and is not recommended. You can contact FA with more detailing info or check out the website:

You should have also received a pamplet/booklet explaining workstudy, as well as an email (my S got both). Good luck!

PS My S got $2500 in scholarships and it reduced his summer contribution. If he gets any more, he will get his workstudy reduced as he would rather not work the first semester.
