Are There Geeks Here

I was reading about this school in Fiske's and it seems like a dream school to me. The only thing that it did not seem to clarify is whether or not there are geeks there. In Fiske's it said "not much of a nightlife" so I'm kind of leaning towards that there are many geeks. I kinda prefer to be around geeks so this would be a pro not a con.

Thanks in advance.

Does anyone who went there know if there are “geeks” at Olin?

As a parent, I never know exactly what different people mean when they say “geeks”. I think you can find out a lot about the type of student that attends Olin by reading other posts and reading blog posts on the Olin website, etc. I think the students at Olin are geeky in the best way, meaning they are intensely curious about all things and passionate about learning. They have both quirky hobbies and mainstream interests, some party, some don’t, some have always made things (or taken them apart) some haven’t, some are athletic, some aren’t, some are gamers, some aren’t. Their daily dress is nerdy casual, but, boy, do they clean up well!!
If you compare them to a conventional group of students at any other small school–I imagine most would say they are geeky–but they are also friendly and outgoing and even the ones who are quieter in general have no problem speaking up in class or getting involved. Olin prides itself in turning out engineers who have not only hard skills, but soft skills that are not what people generally expect from engineers (ability to express oneself well, interest in arts, humanities an social sciences, empathy and caring for our world and one another friendliness, sense of humor etc. etc.). Does that fit the bill, OP?

Siusplau gave a great description. I suggest you search “Olin” on CC and watch the dozens of Olin videos online. You can also read the various blogs (see the bottom of page 1 of the Olin website) and check out the 3 or 4 FB pages. You will get a good feel for the type of people who attend Olin.

What year are you in?

siusplau,
That does fit the bill thank you. By the way I don’t think being a geek is bad.

Yes, I realized that you thought it was a good thing, but some people mean different things when they say geek–like being super into computers/programming–while my generation tends to use geek and nerd interchangeably!

Just got back from my CW and it was definitely geek-friendly  The dorms are the geekiest part, I’d say – lots of them are decked out with homemade loft beds, wall-mounted computer monitors/speakers, projector setups, etc…apparently some kids in the high ceiling upperclassman dorms even build entire new levels and essentially turn their dorm into a two-story. It’s awesome.

They also had to change their car policy to specify one car per student because kids would bring one to drive and one to take apart. Awesome.

AWESOME! Did you get any pictures of the DIY two story?

Or as a matter of fact any of the dorms?

For dorm room pictures, try these from an old Olin blog post.

If you look online there are thousands of pictures and hundreds of videos of every part of Olin, just about every activity that has ever happened, videos of activities such as Parents Weekend, Commencement, different classes, building a loft bed and different views of dorm rooms, Study Abroad.

I only visited Olin for an afternoon, but I would suspect that “not much of a night life” is due to:

1) Not much nearby (no city that has a night life independent of Olin); and
2) Not a large student body (does not generate its own night life).
