Are there many "mainstream" people at Wesleyan?

Right now, I'm up in the air between two schools, Wesleyan being one of them, and I'm a bit worried at how well I'll fit in at Wes.

I am liberal, although I wouldn't say I'm all that politically active and I guess I would label myself as being a little more "mainstream" than what the stereotypical Wesleyan student is portrayed to be like.

Are there many people at Wes who differ from the typical description or are there far and few between?

there are so many 'types' of people at wesleyan that there is a niche for everyone, and as long as someone isnt a a diehard republican, they will fit in.

jedijeff- I'm in the same boat. Liberal, but not flamboyantly or subversively so. I think I'm going to have an overnight at the campus- probably not during 'Wesfest', though, just so I can get a feel for what the campus is like normally- to figure out if I will or won't get annoyed by too much self-indulgent alternative-ness.
What's the other school you're considering, if you don't mind me asking?

bubblewrap, the other school I'm considering is Tufts.

Yeah, I have nothing against being politically active and different. If that's what makes you happy, I say go for it. I just worry about being THE ONLY one who isn't into being overly vocal about politics and being different, etc, etc.

I guess I'd just classify myself as a good student focused on academics rather than somebody who's into hardcore protesting.

I consider myself mainstream liberal, I also had this worry of being one of the "few" not very vocal about politics. However, after visiting twice, I can confidently say that almost the entire campus is mainstream. Wes gets this ultra-liberal rep simply because there are some ultra left people on campus, but they are definitely in the minority. Everyone who is worried about this please don't be, as there is an entire range of people at Wes, and the majority are "mainstream." I was very comfortable on campus, and have also discussed this issue with a current sophmore, who completely agrees that the reputation Wes gets is exaggerated and that the campus is quite normal. Hope this puts your fears at ease!

i lean left, but i'm not hardcore into politics by any stretch of the imagination. i think a lot of people are this way, or most of the people i've interacted with are at least. and i haven't seen anyone drastically into politics on the listserv yet, so it looks alright for us non-"fanatics".

fyi, guys, there is MAYBE one "protest" a year here. the "activism" that's so talked about is really, REALLY not a big deal.
