My daughter’s high school scheduled the Junior prom the same day as the May SAT. Yep-- the only 2 things on the district calendar for that day: the Junior Prom and the SAT.
She asked me this morning to register her for the October exam.
They’re not offering it. They didn’t offer August either.
Are you kidding me???
It will all work out-- she’ll take the exam in a neighboring school where she has some friends.
But it really doesn’t seem like her own school is going out of their way to make this any easier, you know???
Isn’t the prom at night and the test in the morning? It would be worse if the prom were the night before the test I think I had boys, so maybe girls need all day to get dressed for the prom but on surface it doesn’t seem like it would be a big deal, she’ll be done by noon right?
My daughter’s schools didn’t host the ACT or SAT. They were at other schools in the area and no one took them into consideration when scheduling other things. The big drama event was the same day at the ACT in December and the drama teacher wouldn’t let them take the exam that day and be in the event (which was a big deal). The senior night at Universal studios was the night before the April test.
It is really impossible to avoid all the conflicts. The valedictorian at daughter’s first school missed graduation because of the state track meet. He recorded his speech and it was played at graduation. This year because of weather the state track meet was moved to a Sunday, and they held a graduation ceremony for all the seniors because quite a few schools had a conflict with their grad ceremonies that had also been moved because of the weather. It was really nice, and a rainbow of graduation gown colors.
I understand that it’s impossible to avoid all conflicts.
But getting up at 6 am to take the May SAT, then getting nails and hair and makeup done before the Prom…it just seems unnecessarily difficult. It certainly makes for a long day. So everyone she knew took the June SAT.
Then not to offer another SAT until November? Why?
The SAT people decide when and where to offer it. Many years ago when I took ACT/SAT, my high school didn’t host them at all. My 4000 student high school, probably the largest hs in the state, where close to 100% of the students went on to college, didn’t offer them. We just took them at other high schools.
I have boys, but I remember prom for the girls consisted of getting their hair and nails done in the morning or early afternoon, then a pre-prom photo party, then dinner and the prom. So having the SAT that day, before all that would be a drag!
My DD never took the SAT at her own school…and she was fine. DS took his second SAT at a neighboring school.
For my kids…it was outside of school EC commitments. But really…there were plenty of other options from which to choose. Some were a bit of a drive…but oh well.
My kids school had prom on Friday night and the SAT on Saturday. I complained…no one cared, nor did it seem to bother the school…at all. The SAT people may decide where/when to school, but the school decides the prom date. This isn’t an area with a ton of test date locations nearby. S1 and S2 both drove an hour away to take the SAT on another date.
Our school district doesn’t offer any SAT/ACT exams. All tests have to be taken at other local schools. You are very lucky to even have an option for that during some exams. Although I know it’s completely frustrating and head scratching at times… there will always be a conflict for someone. Our school holds the junior and senior prom the same week and day of the week every single year for as long as I can remember. Just have to plan way ahead. As a mom, I feel your pain!
Unless that is a state mandated test date, I don’t see why the school is responsible. There are many other tesr dates and centers available and the test is not scheduled only for senior.
I hate to say this, but this sounds a little bit like a first world problem. The SATs are scheduled essentially every month between August and June. If the prom is on the same night as the SAT, either take the SAT in the morning and do your prom stuff in the afternoon or schedule another exam date at another school. There are no rules that say you have to take the exam at your school, you can take it where ever they are offering it an you can get a seat. The exam is offered in June 2018, then in August, October, November, December (Just register at a school). This is happening 10 months from now giving you plenty of time to come with a plan.
For girls, prom is a long day no matter how you slice it., She can schedule the mani-pedi in advance if she cannot get it all done in the same day. She can schedule hair and make up after after the exam. Your daughter is going to follow your lead on this; if you can calmly schedule the logistics, then she will be ok. But if you are freaking out, you are placing unnecessary stress on her.
My D’s high school has never hosted the SAT. She has taken taken the SAT in a school in my neighborhood, she has taken them at other schools. She took them. There are plenty of schools in the NYC DOE that do not host the SATs. Kids take them at the schools closest to their home or where they can easily get to early on a Saturday morning.
Crazy isn’t it? This year our school had the senior prom the night before the SAT. Although the seniors surely weren’t taking it, many juniors were and many juniors were attending the senior prom including my junior son. I couldn’t believe it. Poor planning.
Who knows – maybe they did it purposefully thinking that students won’t have energy for post-prom partying? In any event it sounds like you have your workaround.
My high school didn’t offer SAT tests. Or if they did, I didn’t take them there. I took one at a neighboring high school and another at a community college. The ACT was also at a different high school.
I don’t see why it is a big deal to take the SAT at a neighboring school. My kids school never gave the SAT/ACT and they always took it at one of the nearby public schools. I also don’t see why she needs to know someone at the school. She is going to go, take the test and leave.
When Prom day comes you will be SOOOOO happy that testing is over.
It happens. There are lots of conflicts to calendars that normally can’t be helped. At our daughter’s high school, I think some end of year sports event was scheduled the same night as prom, so folks rushed back all sweaty to try to get ready. Likely a stinky night for sure.
