Are they serious?

So i understand that getting into Harvard is extremely difficult. But
1) Even though its acceptance rate is give or take 10%, doesn't that still mean one in ten students roughly get in? Does this mean that every single kid who applies is the president of NHS and valedictorian of their class?
2) Every person that I've seen ask for their chances has pretty good stats, but yet everyone still seems to say "Your EC's are too weak". So how many kids are there that have published a book in the past year or have become a professional musician?
3) If every high senior posting their credentials has about a 2300 or above on the SAT's, then whats with the bottom numbers for kids who get accepted into Harvard? Are the kids with the 33's kids who have connections, kids who go to reputable schools or kids who actually stand out? I'm asking this because I doubt I'll have the high test scores that many people have posted here.

And as a side note, what are your chances of getting into Harvard when you get deferred/wait listed?
