Are we having fun yet? :)

On our way to the last audition on Friday. Made a last minute decision to leave tonight and get ahead of the snow that’s coming.

D still has 5 auditions to do. We may drop one as she says she’s never going to go there…sigh. the ONE state university she applied to. She got a call tonight from one school’s music admissions letting her know that her first choice professor was not taking any freshman this year and would she allow her 2nd choice of teacher to be moved to first choice as this professor is highly interested in her? what does that even mean? I have no idea. I’d like to think it means they might make her and offer, but I don’t dare get her hopes up.
sending good vibes to @PopPrincessPop !!! planning a party in my head, too!
Get ahead of that snow @DesignDad! (we are headed to PA on Friday and Montreal on Monday. Fingers crossed the weather isn’t too cookoo!)

Keep posting your experiences @coloraturakid. We will be going through this next year and will appreciate your comments and experiences throughout the process. Good luck!!

Another audition weekend! Dropping in to wish everyone luck, wherever you are this weekend.

Gearing up for an audition week/weekend–Juilliard and St Olaf. Now it’s my daughters turn to be sick. She just finished her high school musical last weekend, and then promptly had all-state choir for three days (concert yesterday). She could barely sing at all-state. The problem with having reflux plus all these potential overuse situations is that it makes it hard to tell what is causing her illness. We go back and forth between thinking it is a cold to thinking it is reflux plus overuse. She is supposedly on complete vocal rest now, but she still whispers so I’m not sure that it’s as effective as it could be. I’m really worried and thinking I should take her to her otolaryngologist for a checkup before we go. :frowning:

She needs to stop whispering. It’s worse than talking.

@choirsandstages, I’m so sorry to hear this. and @musicamusica is correct. whispering is a big no no for sick vocalists. complete vocal rest is the only way. let her type on her phone!
at this moment I am sitting in the fast track/ER at Mt. Sinai with my D who’s throat has not responded to any of our regimes and rituals.
She’s got an 8am flight to Montreal tomorrow.
I could cry.
Actually, I am crying.

((hugs)) to all who are suffering…both kids and the parents who love them!

@coloraturakid --I just read your post and wanted to tell you I’m thinking good thoughts for your daughter and you. I know that I’d be crying too. But I can’t imagine that the schools aren’t used to such situations this time of year, so with some help from Mt. Sinai and a good night’s rest I hope that everything goes beautifully.

And good luck to the rest of you! I’m new to all of this, so I’m reading and learning, and I appreciate it.

Thank you so much @AsMother.
She is resting at home after a deep, intramuscular shot of decadron.
There is an amazing orolyranologist here in NYC. Dr. Kessler. He put a call in for her to get what she needs. I am grateful.

Oh no!! I can’t believe your daughter is going through this, @coloraturakid !! I am glad she has the best of care, and it sounds like things are looking up. My D doesn’t want to take more time off school to go to the doctor before we leave, but I will insist if she’s not better tomorrow.

Ah, yes, fun. I remember it fondly. I’ve been going a little out of my mind applying to just 3 schools, and only auditioning for 2 of them. I can’t imagine what it’s like for people who got 5 or 6 auditions and have 2 during the same weekend. My last one is in 12 days, then I’ll switch to driving myself insane worrying whether I got accepted anywhere, whether I’ll get enough financial aid to be able to afford it, hyper-analyzing every word I spoke during the auditions, tearing my songs apart with a scalpel looking for weaknesses (I’m applying to songwriting programs), and generally shortening my life through stress.

This was so much easier the first time around when I could just fill out a simple form, go to my school counselor, point at a college, say “that one”, and he’d do most of the work to apply. Now I have to know the value of my investments after accounting for capital gains taxes and how much my home is worth in a neighborhood with very volatile prices.

@classicalsaxmom: aw, no hugs for adults returning to school?

@choirsandstages it happens! So being a young vocalist we try at train her with a brilliant regime that keeps her immune system up and nips things in the bud, but this one just wouldn’t budge.
I hope your D will see someone.
Another day missed will mean nothing on. few short months. Health is everything.
I will be thinking about you guys!

@coloraturakid and @choirsandstages best wishes for health and recovery. My daughter got through them all relatively unscathed. She was starting to wear down as she headed into her final audition this past Friday but pushed through. I can’t even fathom what this is like though when you’re child is a singer.

@coloraturakid this may be a sign that you might consider dropping that one in-state audition. If she really doesn’t want to attend anyway an ounce of prevention could be worth it.

YES! thanks @DesignDad, we’ve already decided not to go on Saturday ( it’s actually out of state, she didn’t apply to any in state, but this is was an out of state that offered her instate tuition & she was auditioning for more merit, etc. sob, sigh, whinge!) as she wants to be on top form for her final audition on the 8th.
singers have to take care of their instruments and even the most dedicated teenagers think they are invincible.

@SingingPianist aww here you go ((hugs)) - didn’t intentionally leave you out  good luck to you, too!

We’re done!! S is so happy, he doesn’t know what to do with himself. (lol)

I know a few of you have Juilliard auditions coming up this week – be prepared for a long day! We got there 9am, call-back lists were posted (as in a paper list tacked up on a board) between 2:00 and 3:30 or so (depending on dept.) S wasn’t done until around 9pm. I counted about a dozen names on the call-back list for “vocalists”, if that helps. Good luck!

Congrats to your son @ScreenName48105. Same here, daughter finished up this past weekend. Now we all wait (http://www.violinist.com/blog/karenrile/20143/15651/) Strength and perseverance goes out to all of you still “running the race”!

Funny thing happened last night. I expected D to want to take a few days off as a bit of a mental break (reward?) after all these many months, but she surprised me. Came home from school and said “I’m so excited to practice”. After months of focusing on event-targeted audition rep she was thrilled to be able to simply go play for herself. Very cool.

Congrats @ScreenName48105 and S and @DesignDad and D! Good luck with the waiting!

@DesignDad my son experienced something similar now that all his junior year audition stuff is done (all-district, all-state, a solo performance, summer program recorded auditions). He eagerly dove in to a new solo, new wind ensemble selections and some exercises he has not had time to work on for months. It’s always nice to see that.

Congrats everyone. My D is done w auditions now too. We had to cancel Juilliard due to her illness, but we managed to go to St Olaf and I’m so glad we did, as it is high on her list now. Saw Cantus in concert as well as seeing the St. Olaf choir and orchestra in rehearsals! It was amazing to see Anton Armstrong do his thing up close and personal. All in all it was a good bookend for this crazy process.
