My stepson is a senior in high school and took one last shot on the ACT this month. He got a 33. Needless to say we are ecstatic...but he hadn't applied to any out of state schools because he thought there was no way he could afford to attend. With his 33 (he also has a 4.1 weighted GPA and is Top 10%), he could potentially qualify for a good amount of money out of state...while only qualifying for $5k at his preferred in-state school.

In my research today, though, I see that most schools have a preferred date in early December. Are we just out of luck or does he still have a chance at big scholarships at major universities even though he missed the deadline?

Most admission offices don’t seem to weight GPA.
Whats unweighted?
If he is interested in an oos school, it cant hurt to apply, but awards that are given to freshmen, aren’t always recurring.
Not a lot of oos schools will be more desirable/ less expensive than in state.

Sorry. His weighted is 4.31 and unweighted is 3.71.

Check through the threads on competitive and automatic merit aid at the top of this forum. Some of those places are still accepting applications and awarding merit. Sit down with whoever it is who will be helping this young man pay for his education, and figure out how much money is going to be available. If he will need the kind of aid that his grades and test scores qualify him for, you may want to encourage him to take a gap year and apply early next fall for admission in fall of 2015.

4kidsdad…Thank you. We saw that the scholarship deadline was extended but weren’t sure based on the application deadline of Dec. 15. He is applying and filling out the scholarship app today and we will see what happens.

happymomof1…Thanks to you, too. I will go check out those threads. We have had high level money talks with him but always thought he wanted to go to an in-state school. Just over the holidays he expressed an interest in OOS. Now we are scrambling to try to help him.

Congrats on that 33 - will certainly open up a lot of doors to a lot of money for him. That is wonderful.

Definitely check out University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa), University of Alabama (Huntsville), Louisiana Tech, and University of Mississippi. He still has time to apply to all of these schools.

He could get full tuition at both Alabama universities, an entire full ride at Louisiana Tech, and a lot of merit aid at Mississippi.

We saw that the scholarship deadline was extended but weren’t sure based on the application deadline of Dec. 15

Deadline is now Jan 6th …see below

look at the yellow box on the top of Alabama’s scholarship page and it tells of the deadline extension.

Yes, your son will get the free tuition if he applies now. THIS IS FOR ANY MAJOR!!! Bama does accept weighted GPAs.

What is your son’s major? IF it’s eng’g or comp sci then he gets an add’l 2500 per year on top of the free tuition.
