Are you only submitting an EDI application and then waiting on that decision?

I didn’t realize this was coming, actually, but once the main ED deadlines were past, our HS started strongly encouraging our kids to finalize the rest of their list by 12/1 (and tell them), and start banging out essays. The obvious main point is to avoid a mad scramble, including for them, in late December. But I am sure part of the logic is emotional.

My S24 did about 7 EA/Rolling before doing his ED. The main reason is our high school lists on the graduation program each school where a student received a scholarship. So there was zero chance I wanted a blank list under S24’s name! Of course, if a student gets into Vanderbilt or Notre Dame with no scholarship, then that school isn’t listed. Sort of a silly way to do it.

Well, as it turns out despite planning to only submit his ED I and an EA to our state flagship, DS has submitted a total of 10 applications as of yesterday. He looked at his list and pulled the trigger on any application with no app fee and no supplements, OR those with one supplement that he could modify/adapt from his ED supplements.

Yup. Our school set hard deadlines beyond which CCs would not review essays. I’m sure we’re not alone in that.

So far our staff is more just being encouraging, at least in the mass communications. We would like your list to be final by 12/1, please reflect that in SCOIR, if you are not sure let’s talk, we highly recommend having your RD apps done before winter break, try to get them mostly done by 12/1 so we can then work with you to finalize before break . . . that sort of thing.

I do wonder, though, what some of the more private conversations will start looking like. Unfortunately, I may be finding out . . . .

My S24 got into his ED school last week and I did notate it on Scoir. It is interesting that his very on it counselor has not asked him if he has withdrawn his other apps. But because I knew to do so, and it was in the decision letter, I went online today to take care of it and it really was a hassle. Of the 8 other schools he had applied, only 1 had an official withdraw button. The others I had to track down the email of the regional rep, or I sent it to the main admissions email.
I feel like sending the email asking to withdraw the app is all we need to do, I certainly don’t feel like following up with schools confirming they got the email.
It made me wonder how many kids who get into ED school just do nothing as it relates to all the other apps.

I think you’ve done enough - you’ve made a good faith effort.

Not everyone wants to make it easy for you to say no.

While I’m not an ED parent, I suspect there’s a fair amount of kids that “wait” for the decision because they want to see what happens at the other schools - or just aren’t concerned since they’re taking their ED.

But I don’t know.

Congrats to your student.

Thanks. Being done by 12/1 is such a relief. I probably would not have appreciated it so much if I hadn’t been through the agonizing wait until late spring with S22. I think that was part of the reason I wanted S24 to apply ED, I wasn’t sure I could deal with the long wait again. But we were still undecided between Bucknell, Carleton and Denison days before the ED1 deadline, so that wasn’t fun - making last-minute second trips to schools.
