Yes, NYC is nice, but you will have the rest of your life to live in a city but only 4 years to live in such a beautiful scenic environment.

I don't understand this argument...you can live in Ithaca for the rest of your life too. That would be like a Columbia student saying, "you have the rest of your life to live in the middle of nowhere, but only 4 years in one of the most vibrant cities in the world."

And this is coming from a transfer applicant trying to get out of a NYC college.

The argument makes sense. Whether we end up in Wall Street or med school or law school or just get a job, it is very likely that we'll end up in the city or at least a suburb. So, Cornell is probably one of the few chances we have to live in a rural/natural environment. I enjoy living in the city and wouldn't want to live in Ithaca for the rest of my life (and 95% of the students out there feel this way also) but that's precisely why I enjoyed my 4 years in Ithaca (it's a life that I probably won't get to visit again anytime soon). So, the 4 years in Ithaca and the rest of your life in the city suggestion is much more plausible than 4 years in the city and the rest of your life in Ithaca. No one wants to live the rest of their life in Ithaca but that doesn't mean they can't spend a few years away from the skyscrapers and traffic jams.

^ I agree. For many careers, including mine, the jobs are in the cities. I personally enjoy rural areas, but I also need to earn a living

one day I'll have my cottage in the Adirondacks! one day...

An IBanker went down to Mexico on vacation. He sees a guy fishing there everyday. At the end of his vacation he said to the fisherman, "Don't you have any ambition? Don't you want to get a real job, make some money and have a better life?" The fisherman said, "You seem like you know what you are doing. What do you do?" The IBanker said, "I work at this major WS firm. I am working real hard to put my kids through college, saving a lot of money so someday I could retire to a place like this to go fishing everyday." The fisherman said, "Like what I am doing now."

Maybe it's not such a bad idea to just stay in Ithaca.:)

Hmmm, Rice just offered me a very generous scholarship + Research opportunity, so that's gonna be hard to beat. I think I like Rice more but we'll see about Cornell when I visit. =]

just ask me anytime cornell.....I'll answer back with a hells chyeah

If I could earn a living in Ithaca I would gladly live there. And I am hardly alone, didn't you notice that Ithaca was full of ex-Cornell students who never left?

Re: #19, this doesn't make much sense to me. They don't even know about cross-admits when they make an admissions decision. They are hardly scrounging, they are accepting a smaller % than Cornell. If only because it's a smaller program. Someone might reasonably prefer to go there, if they prefer NYC and are interested in Wall Street or medical school, or research in a field that is well covered there. And they lack the verbal skills or interpersonal profile to be admitted to their liberal arts college. The main thing it may be less good for is: well, engineering. Which I admit is kind of significant, in this context. And campus life, which may be significantly deficient there, by comparison. Their students are compelled to take a portion of "the core", so hopefully those attending want to do that, vs. other free electives of their choosing.

But there are obviously people who assess all this and choose to go there, quite rationaly by their criteria.

If I get accepted to Columbia next Tuesday, I'm definitely going there. Otherwise, I don't know if I'll choose Cornell over UPenn or vice versa...most likely UPenn unless I really like Cornell when I go in April.

What makes you predisposed to the Quakers?

You will love Cornell... You have forgotten all about Penn... What even is Penn... I've never heard of this place...

I wonder if hypnosis actually works...

It doesn't, but the Jedi Mind Trick never fails

Meh... Threats of Chuck Norris never cease to work for me- and I've actually met him a few times.

I'm sure Penn's engineering program also has an niche where it is an excellent choice for certain people. If someone would prefer that package, as a whole, they should go there. There have been occasions where someone makes a choice that is wrong for them from the outset, and then these boards get filled with their justifications for leaving. Best make the right choice up-front.

I'm going to cornell unless chicago gives me almost a free ride- which isn't likely so i'm 80% sure that i'm heading to ithaca.

Yeah, i got in, but i probably won't know until next week where i will decide to go...
