Are you turned on or off by Columbia?

I live in NYC so I've visited the school and I've also recieved the viewbook and in both glimpses of the university I was really turned off because it seems to market itself as having this ultra intellectual atmosphere. Even if you take a look at the viewbook, the resident life section is only a page that shows students arguing about philosophy in their FREE time. And the viewbook is really just an advertisement for all the books their professors have published.

I don't know but this all seems so styfling, doesn't it? College is supposed to be fun.

I agree. I find it very offputting when colleges emphasize how "intellectual" they are. College is supposed to be an education ANYWAY, in CLASS. I sure as hell don't want to be arguing with a bunch of geeks about existential philosophy in my dorm. I wanna go to class, learn and then go get drunk. DUH, that's what college is SUPPOSED to be.

I agree. I was also interested in Columbia. First off, their campus isn't nice at all. Secondly, their student body is very...boring? There are other good schools out there for undergrad. I don't think IVY LEAGUE schools should be considered in your choice for undergraduate schools. I believe they should only be considered for GRADUATE school.

1) It is a big hole in your pocket for undergrad...
2) It'd be a waste if you really do want to go further in your particular major and end up going to a graduate school

Overall... it's dull..pointless..and boring...but thats just my opinion.

I'm sure this isn't limited to just Columbia.

Anyways... I suppose this is why you're supposed to visit colleges and not go solely by the viewbook. :P

I really want to go to a nerdy school, so they are apealing to some students

^ Yeah but nerdy and boring are completely different entities. MIT is way nerdy but they aren't styflingly "intellectual" as Columbia is.

I'm pretty big on intellectual too. if i had the grades i'd be all over columbia and avoiding mit like the plague
