Are you willing to stay another year at CC to get into your first choice school?

This is actually my plan if I don’t get into Cal. I graduated from high school a year early, so if I have to wait until Fall 2012 to transfer, I’ll be right on schedule. I know admission gets harder every year, but the goal would be to raise my GPA. If that doesn’t work out, I’ll pick a different UC.

I can’t believe some of these people who say they would rather DIE than stay at their CC a little longer. I stayed long at my community college so that I could get good grades without having a brain aneurism. I also worked my a** off to be able to pay for the UC without going deep into debt. I’m now finishing up my bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at UCD, and my biggest concern is choosing between the grad schools I’ve been accepted to.

Grades come first, and by the way, you don’t HAVE to go to Cal.

I can’t see myself staying another year at CC. This semester I’m at three different schools just to get the classes I need and it’s so frustrating! I spent three semesters trying to get into a chem class. Parking is a disaster at all the schools and with people from my high school class graduating next year, I’m starting to feel behind a little.

I’m in at UCR so far, and while it’s not my top choice I think I’d go.

Though I guess I’ll just have to see how everything goes! Hopefully I don’t have to make that decision!

Yeah all I got accepted to so far is UCR and I rather go there then my CC for a FOURTH year. I was already behind a dam year cause they are so many dam prereqs for Bio majors and I didn’t know about any of them when I first started (counselor sucked hardcore)

Some good points in this thread:

  1. I have been rejected by UC Riverside and CSULB so far so I am not very optimistic about the others. I have started to plan otherwise, at this point its not even about getting into my first choice but just getting in. But, the question is what am I gonna do. I will have to change my major to Bioengineering to take classes that will raise my GPA or something while looking relevant rather than a waste of time when I apply next year. But that was not my original career plan to begin with.
  2. As someone mentioned above, it is another gamble I have to take next year because what’s the guarantee I am going to get in? Everyone is changing their TAG requirements and I will be going from a non-impacted major - Electrical Engineering to an impacted one so the competition becomes harder.
In conclusion, my answer to your question is, if I got into another university that is my 2nd or 3rd choice (UCI and UCSB) then no, I would not go through this russian roulette again.

Im a little worried about staying another year because this quarter I wasn’t a full time student. I’ve heard that I have to be a full time student every quarter to receive tag if thats true then my chances diminish severely…

I might have to do this If I don’t get into UCI or Davis. While it will be harder to transfer, we will have an easier load for the next year, and therefore we can take classes that interest us and get better grades in them.

GPA = up

No way you can lose unless you’re lazy.

Yeah…I wouldn’t stay another year in the hell hole I call Community College…Plus it’s going to be tougher next year so it’s not worth risking another year of your life just to get into your top school.

as much as i love community college i wouldn’t want to stay another year. the only reason why i stayed the third year was because i took an internship over summer school which put me back a semester. my plan was to transfer to ucsd winter 2011 but that never happened because they took it out. also too it was because i dropped one of my courses so it was basically a downward spiral right there. but the semester after all the crap happened i got everything back on track and im ready to move forward. ucsd ftw!

I was denied from UCLA last year, but got into UCI and UCSD. I decided to wait another year and try again. If I don’t get into UCLA this year I will def go to my back-up…prob UCI.

I think it depends on your plan. I will not be going to grad school so waiting another year for a chance at UCLA again is worth it to me. If you def plan on attending grad school then I say don’t wait, take your back-up since you have grad school to look forward to.

@SMCguy how old are you/when did you graduate hs? Just wondering :)

There is absolutely, positively no way I am staying at community college for a second more than I need to. It was great while it lasted, but if I have to deal with one more class there I’ll die. I’m totally fine going to UCR or UCI or wherever to just get my BA. Really, grad school is what is more important to me. I have UCR so far (and a sweet, sweet financial aid deal) and have a solid GPA for the other schools plus a TAG to UCI and UCSB so there is absolutely no way I will have to stay. I got in an out in about 2 years with summer school and winter sessions, not throwing that away just to go to UCLA or Cal.

No.

As a past transfer, I would stay an extra year to complete all pre-reqs. It gives a bit more flexibility when choosing classes which can make a difference. I’d definitely take a bio pre-req at CC than at UCB.

My decision to stay a 3rd year was because 1) I knew people who were staying and taking the same courses at me and 2) I was covered by financial aid for the extra year. As long as I had a high GPA and completed pre-reqs, I wasn’t worried about getting into UCB or any other UC.

I go to SMC which isn’t so bad actually. It’s just boring. I feel like I’m floating around in an extension of highschool. But if I only get into UCI, I probably won’t go, even though I like the idea of asian dancers.

UCI felt like an extension of community college in the one quarter I spent there.

But were there asians dancing in the hallways? Because I think that would make the price of tuition worth it on its own.

Negative. A lot of Asians, but none dancing in hallways that I noticed.

people staying next for ucsd should check out the new tag agreement. the required is now 3.5

My first semester at a CCC, I only took 6 units because I had a low priority registration number. I’ll be finishing up my second year here at the end of this Spring with 40 units so I have to stay an extra year.

… Mind you, I’ve never taken a term off since I graduated high school in 2009 (Fall, Spring, Summer). At the end of 3 years, I’ll be done with 64 semester units and will most likely have a 3.4-3.7. I’ll go to whichever UC accepts me.

There’s no way in hell I’m going to spend 4 years at a community college. 3 years is enough. Wish I had gotten it done in 2.
