Argh: 760 words too long?

For the college supplement essay where no limit is specified, is 760 words way too long? I've tried and tried to cut it, but somehow, it just doesn't work.

any opinion would be helpful, thanks! Just a simple yes or no.

In a word, yes. Supplemental essays can be longer, but nothing more than 600.

Yes. Brevity will serve you well.

One thing that adcoms look at in your essays is your command of the English Language. If you can give some great ideas in 760 words, that's good, but if the next applicant can give the exact same thing in 500 words, then you've just been beaten.

If there is no word limit, and your essay fits on one page, it's fine.

get a second opinion. Your essay will be compared to those of students who wrote well with brevity. You have plenty of rewrite time.

Mine was around 800, but I've managed to get it down to like 600. Cutting hurts, I know. Brevity is great, but if you really can't get it down to less than, say, 700 (try for low 600s though) it's not the end of the world. There isn't a word limit for a reason.
