Can anyone tell he their thoughts on Arizona State’s film school? My son has been accepted. He is OOS and also been accepted to Columbia College and SCAD. All are expensive, but with a scholarship ASU is most affordable. This year he has won multiple state awards for his work already and think it likely he will at least win a regional Emmy if not a national for a complex short film he has done. He is talented, so I want to get him in a school that will allow him to develop that skill while also not put me in the poor house. ASU is great because he could minor in another area as something to fall back on if needed. Spent time with the Dean and a professor and was impressed! Currently still in the mix at FSU. Hoping he gets an interview call next week. Also applied to USC, but suspect it’s unlikely he will get in there simply by looking at the gpa statistics and sheer number of people who apply. Did your ASU, but they have moved to a new facility. SCAD and Columbia have great facilities as does FSU. Thoughts?
I am interested to know about this, as well. My D is a current junior, so we will be applying this fall.
I am also interested…my son was accepted into ASU for Fall 2017. We loved it there…he still hasn’t heard back from all his applied to schools yet…FSU being one of them. We are anxiously waiting. We did take the tour of the film school…didnt show us much but the facilities were nice. There was only one rep there and he really didn’t answer a ton of our questions.
Did you see Sun Studios? Have you seen FSUs, Columbia or SCADs? How did ASU compare. We toured before Sun Studios were in the mix. Have only seen pictures. We have seen the above and their facilities are top notch. Today and possibly the next few days will be stress provoking waiting in FSUs admission decisions and possible interview. Waiting on USC as well. Long shot even with a good portfolio. Would love to see what you felt about ASU studios in comparison to FSU or any big program toured.
We toured in June last year and no Sun Studios…like I said above there wasn’t much to the tour except speaking to the some limited staff and a student from the film program. Didnt get to see many film making facilities. Saw equipment…looked top notch! Can you explain Sun Studios? Why dont we know about that if his major is film. lol! WE toured Herberger…and some classrooms. He also has applied to UCF, and all the California long shots…USC, UCLA and LMU. Still waiting to hear again they were dream applications. He LOVES everything about ASU…I mean everything…he wanted to go the minute we finished touring…he just felt he didn’t find out enough info on the film program itself. Again it was summer not too many people around. Keep me posted on yours…and please let me know what Sun Studios is…I am going to look that up now.
We just got a no from FSU today…they say academics…he had a 3.4 and 1200 SATS.
And we did tour ALL the biggies…USC, UCLA, FSU…all of them!
https://asunow.asu.edu/20161117-lights-camera-action-asu-film-program-moves-state-art-studios Just found this!
It looks super nice…Im pretty excited about this thank you for the info…we knew nothing about this!
Yes we got a no from FSU today on academics as well. Mainly gpa was the problem. Same range. Good ACT. Really think you have to be up in the 3.8 range. So many of these big school are weaning out big talent without ever getting to or even looking at their portfolios. ASU is a growing school. Sun Studios looks nice. I love ASU. I think it is a good idea to double major in business or marketing. This way if the job market is poor, they have options. We literally ran into an associate dean and dean of Herberger while visiting. They said double majoring or taking on a minor is possible. But…My son is leaning toward Savannah College of Art and Design. It has great facilities and top 20 film school ranking, but not much to offer as far as double majors or minors in business/marketing. This college search is frustrating. Limited by cost, lack of portfolio reviews, distance and generally super high gpa demands. Frustrating search for sure. Son is doing well this award season, so I want to encourage him and give him a chance to succeed, but finding the right fit that balances price with academics with prime facilities is hard. Choices are Columbia College-Chicago, ASU and SCAD. Fewer smaller school admits, but not good choices. Awaiting USC, but doubt that will be a yes. Good luck to your son as he awaits his decisions. ASU is good option!
Last night we realistically looked at his options. ASU is probably going to be his choice. Are you all OOS? Looking for or know anyone looking for a roommate? My son is fun loving and energetic. He likes to have fun but prefers responsible non partier. Enjoys the outdoors, loves watching sports especially football (will be going to the ASU games) and is serious about filmmaking. Probably not going Greek, but has no problem if roommate is Greek. Familiar with Ariz. Has Grandma and Aunt in Chandler. Figured I would throw it out to you in case your son needs a roommate. My son will go in knowing no one! That is stressing him a bit!
@FHSTN sorry I can’t help you out, as I have a daughter who will be a 2018 Freshman.
Check out Ringling’s film school. Fairly new program but already top rated.
I’m currently a Freshman at ASU now majoring in film. If you are interested in learning about film production and anything related to film, please do not go to ASU. I went into ASU already knowing a good amount about film and on making my own videos on my YouTube channel and this first year here has been a waste. The film classes are mediocre and mostly focused on theater and the people who simply “enjoy” movies. This past year I have spent my time learning how to draw a box with a ruler on paper and how to cut paper without using scissors in my film design class. I’m not joking. I loved the feel of ASU while visiting but now I feel like I’m wasting my time. Looking back at it, during touring as a high schooler, the faculty at ASU never really showed much about the program. It’s all talk. They will not live up to what the are saying. I am already waiting to start transfer applications to leave after sophomore year. I don’t want any more serious film students out there to waste their time and money.
