Didn’t see a general film school discussion for all Co2023 submitted apps and acceptances.
Where did you apply for film?

DS applied Early Decision to Chapman Film production and was accepted so he withdrew his application to LMU and didn’t finish his applications for NYU, Emerson or his backup state schools.
Congratulations @jss9395 !
Have you visited Chapman’s facilities? Beautiful. DS wanted to apply, but it wasn’t financially feasible for us.
On another note. DS was accepted to UMich LSA EA. Lesser known film program, but great facilities and great screenwriting submajor
Thank you @romns116 Yes my daughter is a junior in Creative Producing there so we have visited quite a bit! Chapman is VERY generous with their financial aid–both merit and need based. It is actually costing us less for her to attend there than it would for her to attend a Cal State (and we are in state) with their financial aid! Of course now we will have two there and that scares me! But we will manage.
So he applied to USC but not Chapman? USC is actually more expensive and is harder to qualify for merit aid.
Anyhow…good luck to your son!
That’s awesome to hear @jss9395 !
I’m glad Chapman’s FA was very generous for you. I wish that was the case for DS. NPC was almost 30k, while USC is <10k (0 EFC, OOS)
DS is a QB finalist, since USC is a partner school and Chapman isn’t, that may have been a factor.
We also visited LMU, loved it also, but also unaffordable for us. UT (in state) is also a good backup for DS where he would definitely be happy.
UT is an awesome film school!
I wasn’t familiar with QB (questsbridge I assume?) so I did a search–from reading their website it seems to be for low income students? Chapman Financial Aid has a policy to meet all need–we actually pay less than our EFC-- so I am shocked they wouldn’t do that for your son. If he didn’t apply, how did you learn it would not be affordable? Just curious.
USC is a private so out of state versus in state is not a factor–lots of people assume that since it has University and California in it that it is a state school, but as a private tuition is the same regardless of where your permanent residence is. The only difference would be travel expenses, of course, and the general level of expense in California being much higher than most other states.
Yes, Questbridge focuses on high achieving, lower income applicants. Among the 40 partner schools, there are only a handful of legitimate film schools. But even so, their acceptance rates are in the single digits.
Chapman does meet full need, but they do so by using the parent plus loan, which we wouldn’t qualify for. I spoke directly with Chapman Financial Aid numerous times (I really hoped it would work).
We used the Net Price Calculator for each school DS was going to apply for, and removed schools that provided an estimated net price that was clearly out of our range. Unfortunately, Chapman was one of those removed.
And Yes, we love UT! We’re originally from SoCal (SD), but now live about 1hr from UT. DS did the Summer Adv Narrative Filmmaking Camp and loved it.
Oh interesting! They met my daughter’s full meed without the parental loan, that’s too bad.
I’m sure you will have many good options! Best to do with as few loans as possible, of course.
My DS got admitted to film Park School for TV&Film at Ithaca. Does any one else applied and planning to go there?
Congratulations @Ultramarine777 !
I’ve heard wonderful things about the Ithaca film program at Park from the DKA people at Cornell. If he’s interested in networking with other students about cinematic arts, contact the DKA chapter at IC.
@romns116 , Thanks! Sorry , but what is is DKA? He has not decided where is going yet, but I sure let him know to do the research.
My D applied and accepted to LMU, Depaul, UNCSA, and SCAD.
My D has applied to to film programs at USC, UCLA, Chapman, LMU, NYU, BU, Emerson, Wesleyan, Middlebury, Vassar and Northwestern. She is currently on a gap year attending Prague Film School. She wants a career in production but would be happy at a mostly liberal arts school, especially now that she will start college already having a year of constant production experience. She took IB Film in high school.
She didn’t apply anywhere ED as it will come down to financial aid. We live in Japan due to my husband’s temporary contract and the boost to my husband’s income is more than offset by the expenses of having both a temporary Japan residence and permanent US residence and much higher income taxes in Japan. For example, the USC tuition calculator (FAST) considers only gross income.
@Nickih congratulations! LMU has a beautiful campus and a wonderful film program. We visited last year. DS liked the campus and the film students were kind enough to accommodate us for a walk-in semi-tour.
@filmmomvt great list of film schools! Among the LAC/non-traditional film schools, DS also applied to Wes and Emory. From the people I’ve spoken to (current students and graduates) everything about Wes sounds like a great fit for your D. Their above the line footprint in the entertainment industry is amazing.
I was accepted to LMU for film&television production. (Anxiously) waiting to hear back from USC, UCLA, Chapman, NYU, and BU. Does anyone know when exactly Chapman production EA decisions are released? I’ve heard mid-February.
Champan has been releasing some EA this week, I don’t know that they are done yet because they said by mid February. A few of DS’s friends have heard.
@Ultramarine777 DKA is the film fraternity:
DS was 100% set on being a film director, but now that has loosened to “something in the film/tv industry (above the line, some creative capacity).” Very normal and expected, with more changes to come.
With that, I’d love to hear your thoughts…
DS received the Shipman Scholarship from UofM, which doesn’t have a well-known film program, but it seems very solid with good alumni representation in the entertainment business. This scholarship would likely mean a full ride with no loans. He was also accepted into RTF Moody Honors at UT (w/ Pres Scholar), which would likely be full ride as well.
UT has the better film program with deeper connections in LA, but if his interests grow/change I’ve read that switching majors is easier in LSA (UofM) vs Moody (UT). Months ago, UT would’ve been the no-brainer, but the Shipman nomination may provide a tighter-knit group that he was hoping to get in Plan II (denied).
Since affordability was our biggest factor, we’re extremely grateful to have two outstanding options.
I applied to Columbia College Chicago, UNCSA, Chapman, Ithica, SCAD.
Got into all of them, but ultimately decided to attend UNCSA for Fall 2019 for many reasons. Super happy with my choice!
My son also chose UNCSA
