Armed Intruder in Wharton

To an earlier poster: As far as I know, the Swarthmore administration is concerned but probably won’t do anything.

It went out to the MyKidis@ list.

I think what steps that can be taken are being taken. I am a faculty member and clinical counselor at a university in Kentucky; these incidents happen. I present to parents from time to time and emphasize that as much as we would wish otherwise, the issues out there in the world have a way of getting through our campus gates.

I’ve not posted much over the past four years; others have said what needs to be said much more effectively than I could. My spouse and I are very much looking forward to what, sadly, will likely be our last drive up to Swarthmore. We’ll be coming up for our daughter’s graduation. It’s been a wonderful four years for our family. Indeed, an astonishingly short four years.

Hopefully we’ll get the chance to see some of the folks we’ve met only through posts on this bulletin board.

Best wishes to all the graduates-to-be.

Sincerely,

Bill

KYDad, Congratulations to you and your daughter! Since I will be delivering a brand-new Swattie to campus this fall, I’d love to hear why you felt your child’s Swarthmore years were so special for you and your family. It’s great to know you feel this way!

The faculty make the college and the faculty our daughter had the chance to work with are first rate. Her intellectual interests have been encouraged; she has engaged in scholarship at levels that most junior faculty would not have done at many colleges. I think the support her faculty have given her in terms of encouraging her to concentrate and develop expertise beyond the content in the classroom has been unusual for many colleges, but not for Swarthmore. She has had professional role models both at Swarthmore and through contacts developed elsewhere. The mentoring relationship is a very strong one in her department. I imagine that is true across the campus; it seems to be part of the campus culture.

I hope this helps and wish your family the same happiness that ours has enjoyed.

Thank you! I am so excited for my kid–I really think Swarthmore is the perfect, perfect place for a very particular kind of child, and it sounds as if your daughter is just that kind of learning-hungry student.

a bit off topic, but speedo, "The college doesn’t pay real well "–are you KIDDING ME???

you clearly have no idea what you are talking about. especially after all the living wage controversy here a few years ago, our employees are paid well and have great benefits. it’s finals season and so i don’t have time to go collect all the information about this from across the web, but it’s readily available on the swarthmore.edu website. also consider the Learning for Life program in which employees can use two hours of their PAID time to learn about math or writing or even something as frivolous as hosting their own radio show. how many employers will let you do THAT?

i really, really doubt that the perpetrator here was a swarthmore employee.
