Army Crew/rowing

hey, I an going to WP in June, class of '10.

I was wonering if anyone knew anything about Army crew, or how to try-out for a club sport.

yeah, i did crew first semester but i had to quit because i have a bad back. there will be a club night one of the first nights of the academic year and all the club sports will try to recruit people. they'll tell you when the tryouts are. they lasted about a week for us. beware though, crew tryouts were the hardest thing i have ever done.

thanks,

what is the best way to prepare for tryouts, other than basic stuff for beast.

Find an erg. Or, better yet, find a local club that will give you some basic instruction. This will make your efforts much more efficient during tryouts (and you'll last a lot longer).

yeah, although tryouts don't really consist of erging, it will help your stamina. i recommend running hills and find a stadium to run. that was the worst day when we ran up to the football stadium. we had to go up and down 25 times. if you runs stadiums though, you should do well.

I will also start at WP this summer and was wondering about competing in crew. Does anybody know how many plebes try out and how many make the men's team each year? I have no experience in crew (I don't know anyone who does in the midwest) and was wondering if I even had a chance.

thanks

maybe only two people that tried out for crew this year had experience, so don't worry about that. i think about 30 to 35 guys tried out and 18 of us made it. make sure you are in pretty good shape. also, if you are over six feet it really ups your chances of making the team.

i dont know about my skills on a stadium, but i was a swimmer and am 6ft. I have broad shoulders, and I think i have a good body for crew, but I have no experience. my brother walker on at uri as did my cousin at syracuse, so I think after beast, I should be in good shape for, as I am in fine shape now, i hope....
