Hi! This summer I have the opportunity to attend an Army laboratory internship at a base nearby my house. Now I know that there is a...rivalry (to say the least) between navy and army. If I were to attend this (an Army sponsored program) would it be frowned upon by the admissions people at USNA? Like would it hurt or boost my chances of making it in? Thanks

i would have to doubt it, dont take this as any real valid answer as it is just my opinion but basicallly my thinking says thats a pretty cool thing to get to do and i mean kids from army jrotc programs get in so why should something that probably real hard to get into like a military lab internship be a bad thing

usna3630 - you have nothing to worry about. Go and congratulations. If anything it will help your Navy application!

I am currently in Army JROTC and have received my offer of appointment. The "rivalry" is simply a game

IMO, going to an Army program should only strengthen your application, because it shows that you are serious about military programs and service.

Lizandro makes a great point. The Army-Navy rivalry is fierce, but it only applies to sports and such. Other than in sports, members of our services are brothers and sisters in arms. I jokingly asked a long time friend who is now a retired Army Lt. Col. if he would still speak to us, once my daughter applied to USNA. He said without any hesitation that he had the utmost respect for the Navy and Marine Corps (and AF) people he served with in Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and that he would never say anything bad about them. Of course, we still sat on opposite sides at Army-Navy!

Remember, too, that every semester the service academies each have exchange students, and nearly every commissioned officer eventually serves a "joint" tour in a different service.

Ok thanks for the thorough replies!
