Art 8

Do I have to be good at art for this class?
I'm not artistic at all, but I want to take this class for breadth.

Art 8 is basically Introductory Art, so artistic skill isn't assumed. That said, many of the students are quite good, so you might find critiques and gallery showings a little overwhelming.

so..what are grades based on?

&& also what specifically do you do in this class..?

anyone?????

So, I only took it for a week before switching to another art class, so I can't exactly tell you how the grading works. I'm guessing it's an easy A, though.

Basically, Art 8 introduces students to all kinds of different media; it is not strictly a drawing or painting course. It's great for fulfilling major and breadth requirements, but if you're somewhat serious about art, I recommend skipping it altogether (along with all the other lower-division art courses at Cal.)

Kultur Wolf, i thought art 8 was what you had to take before you take the other art classes?

because i am serious about art and i can't ft art 8 into and dont really want to take it

If you plan to major in Art, then you might as well take it, because the major requires it. You may be able to waive it, but I can't tell you for certain.

If you're not a major, but artistically experienced, I recommend emailing some of the upper-division instructors for permission to enroll. In my experience, the department is pretty laid back about this.

ohh ok yeah cause i am not planning to major so the upper division ones aren't 12 13 or 14?

So yeah. You could take 12, 13, or 14 if you want to, but I skipped all the way to 172. Just depends on your interests.

(Just for future reference, "upper-division" generally means course numbers between 100 and 199.)

has anyone take 12, 102, 117 or 118??
if so what do you do in each class? i read the class descriptions and i still do not fully understand.
and what is the 3 hours of studio time> is it required>?

bumpp please

For me, Art 8 was not difficult at all (it's pretty laid back). The only problem with the class are the long long studio times. It's a beginning course, so students are not graded on technique, only effort. Basically grades (depending on the teacher) are based on dedication to projects and exercises, participation in critiques, short responses, and maybe a presentation. The studio times are used for working on projects and exercises the instructor assigns, and yes, they are required.

But overall, if you can fit in into your schedule, take it! I would suggest taking it in the summer though, so you have more time. It's a pretty fun class. It's especially easy if you have done art before.

is it an easy A? and do you like draw and paint alot or is it other stuff?

For Art 8, the lectures are given by the professor. The studios are led by GSIs (grad students). Your grade mainly depends on which GSI you have. My GSI was really lenient. She pretty much gave everyone A's.. just as long as they went to studio.
