Art Center College of Design

I am highly considering going here in the fall. (BFA Photography) I am also considering SAIC, SVA, & Ringling. Does anyone have any thoughts and advice about the school? Financial aid info? Are the fine arts equally appreciated as their design and illustration departments? Do people like commuting (Does commuting make it feel like high school?)? Study away & abroad options? Any information regarding my questions or any other comments regarding the school and their programs would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I’ve been at Art Center about two years with a couple of terms off. It’s a decent school, the politics are nuts, much worse than the school I transferred from—to get away from politics. Colleges, it turns out, are notorious for politics some are worse than others… Their financial aid dept is stupid and may as well not exist. Many students have loans over $150 k. The fine art dept is good, but there is a dept chair that wants to see the fine dept go away, crazy. The design dept thinks it’s more import—not sure if they get treated equally by admin. The commuting issue is a pain. Los Angeles is huge. I used to live in LaVerne to save money on rent, but the gas was killing me. Moved to Pasadena, rent is higher, but consistent and gas is more manageable. Not sure about high school, most of the students are too serious. They do a good job with the study abroad opportunities, depends on your major. I’m stuck here, I can’t transfer again, I wouldn’t choose Art Center again.

Oh goodness! That is too bad! Do you feel comfortable sharing where you transferred from? What is your major? Since you said you would not have chosen Art Center again, is there a school that you would choose?
I will actually be attending Art Center starting this fall term. Not that being a transfer student should make a difference, but do you think your experience there so far would be the same or different if you would have been there from the start? Do you know if there study away options count as a term? Any other advice you can think of would be appreciated as well! :)
