I'm definitely going to do an art history major but it doesn't seem like a hugely popular major so I'm not sure what schools have stronger departments in it. So does anybody know which schools have great art history departments? Thanks!

penn claims to be "world-famous"

Research Williams art mafia.

Try NYU. It's supposed to be the best.

I've also heard good things about Northwestern, Bryn Mawr, and Boston U.

Seeking what end game is more the question. Williams has a lock on museum directors .......Williams art mafia.

Columbia, Harvard, and UC Berkeley are also excellent.
Liberal arts colleges with strong programs include Williams and Oberlin, which both have great art museums.

clandestinelove,
I'm not sure if it matters, but I recently created a thread about art museums on college campuses. Maybe you can find something in here to help you make a more informed choice. Here is the link:

clandestine,

Williams has one of the world's best with an excellent track record for placing its graduates in museums and PhD programs. So many US museums are run by Williams alums that they call them the Williams mafia. There are three worldclass museums on or near campus which allow for a hands-on teaching experience. Having said that Williams is highly selective and located in an isolated New England village, so it's not for everyone.

Other small liberal arts colleges with good art history (and studio) departments are Wesleyan, Vassar, Skidmore, Conn College, Hamilton, Kenyon, Oberlin and if you are female, Smith and Bryn Mawr.

Among the ivy league I like Brown and Yale best, but all of them (with the exception of Dartmouth) have good departments. For medium-big privates, Carnegie Melon and Johns Hopkins. Stanford on the westcoast.

MANY large state universities have very good art history. Michigan, Virginia, UC Berkeley come to mind, but there are most likely others.

This certainly doesn't mean that we have a GOOD program, but Rice recently received a large donation to start up a PhD program in art history (the only one in Houston), so at the very least, we care about the major.
