Which colleges and universities have a good art history program for undergrads. My D is beginning her search for colleges and universities and is leaning toward a LAC. May minor in chem and/or languages. She will likely be very competitive in the admissions process. Her early short list includes Williams and Southwestern University.

That's a tough one - I'm currently exploring graduate Archaeology (Classical/Med.) programs so I run into quite a few Art History departments and I haven't seen any formal undergrad. ratings.

That said, I'll put in a plug for my undergrad school: Penn. Although I'm in Classics, we share a number of courses with Art History and the faculty, in my experience (Kuttner, Pittman and Rose if you want to loook 'em up), has been uniformly excellent. Their website is here:

Another thing to think about - while slides are a fact of life for Art History majors, if I were in your place, I would be looking for a school that either has a solid museum collection or has a good working relationship with nearby public museums. (Not surprisingly Penn has both.) Nothing can replace actually being able to handle the material you're studying.

UCLA, Princeton, Harvard---but a lot depends on what approach she wishes
to take. Is she interested in connoissership, sociology, possibly art restauration?

any of the Seven Sisters, especially Smith or Bryn Mawr.

I'd recommend Northwestern University. I'm planning on pursuing a Journalism/Art History degree there, and their Art History department sounds fantastic. Aside from being ranked in the top 10 nationally, the department allows for students to intern and study at "exhibitions and other events at the Art Institute of Chicago, NU's own Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, and other Chicago-area art institutions." Additionally, NU offers a plethora of study abroad programs for Art History majors, including the opportunity to study in Italy, England, France, etc.

Good luck in your search!

Thanks taryn. We will add NU to the list. I have this same question on another thread. Suggestions thus far include NU, Penn, Williams, Bryn Mawr, and Harvard. I wasn't aware that Harvard had an undergrad AH program. Best of luck in your endeavors.

I will second Williams, though it is already on your list. I have no personal experience with their program, but a friend of mine who is attending says that it is very strong.
