Art Practice Major @ UC Berkeley

I recently applied to Berkeley and put down Media Studies as my choice major. However, I'm leaning now more toward majoring in Art Practice if I'm accepted & choose to go. I would like to have a career in art or film (i.e. working at a gallery, as an actual artist or filmmaker, etc.). Also, I'm a lot more interested in contemporary arts like video, performance, & installation art rather than traditional painting & drawing.

I don't know much about Berkeley's Art Practice major but can anyone tell me anything about it? Does it sound like it might be the right place for someone like me? Does Berkeley have a good atmosphere for someone who is an aspiring artist/filmmaker?

I don’t think Berkeley is going to be the place for you - or at least not as an Art Practice major. There are contemporary art classes, but in terms of filmmaking, video, etc., Berkeley’s Art Practice department doesn’t have many options for you. There are a few computer graphic classes, but other than that, expect to do more traditional forms of art.

Berkeley has a great atmosphere for artists, but the resources for the art department (especially for an aspiring filmmaker) aren’t that great. Consider sticking to Media Studies if you for sure want to go to Berkeley to do more film-related stuff. I don’t know if you applied to Tisch School of Arts (NYU) or USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, but those two are among the best in filmmaking.

Ya Calbear1 is right. Nobody is willing to do a nude painting of me just because I’m 5’6 230 pounds…
