Art programs

Are there any visual/performing art summer programs that are low cost? I was really interested in attending some last year, but I never sent in my applications and portfolio because we definitely couldn't afford it.

There's Parsons Pre-College Academy/SPACE which costs around $1000 for two weeks. You take drawing in the morning and a concentration in the afternoon. There's not really an application process-- you just have to pay them-- you don't have to send in portfolios or anything. However, it's a commuter program (no housing) so if you don't live in the NYC area or if you don't have any relatives you can stay with during the duration of the program, then it's not right for you.

SVA has an [art program](http://www.schoolofvisualarts.edu/ce/index.jsp?sid0=4&sid1=63) that’s pretty cheap compared to other art schools’ precollege summer programs.

It doesn’t require a portfolio for acceptance; honestly I don’t know of any precollege art programs that do, except in the case of scholarships (which, if you’ve got an organized portfolio, you should definitely apply for to lower the cost of the program).

A couple other programs that aren’t enormously cheap but offer scholarships are Pratt and RISD.

Thanks for the ideas. I live in Michigan, so the first idea won’t work. I might look further into the second, but it seems like after tuition/room/board/additional fees it really adds up. :(

Parsons also has a longer program that’s about 4 weeks and you can get housing but it will cost a lot more. You can try applying for financial aid if the programs have any or you can look into art programs at art schools/museums near where you live in Michigan. It’ll probably be cheaper since you can live at home and some museums in New York have free programs for people who go to New York City public schools so you might want to check out some options closer to where you live.

Yeah, i’ve checked nearby options, but CCS isn’t even that close to me so it’s a little inconvenient. Plus i’d really like to get out of the area for the summer.

Aurorative - Most decent summer art programs most definitely require a portfolio, in addition to transcript, recommendations and more. (MICA, RISD, NYU, Skidmore, AIB I think Syracuse all want to see a portfolio, usually around 10 pieces.)
