@julyleswk9 Where did you see that?
Daughter got into UCSC and Emerson also. Now waiting to hear from RISD, Pratt and Drexel.

@AskExperts, GPA last year was 88% - we don’t use a 4 point scale. All the humanities were A’s but he was dragged down by math and science which he hated. ACT was 25. I’d say he is a solid B+ student. In our experience, none of the schools cared about grades or test scores. It’s all about the portfolio. He started his early and actually had way too much and had to curate a bit.
His final portfolio was a combination of live model (nude) drawings, sketches from life, illustrations from his imagination, and comic panels. I would say at least 50% was from life. He went to NPD and got feedback from each school and tailored the submitted portfolio to match what they said they liked. His total portfolio is not in one place online, but here are links to a few pieces:

@AskExperts I forgot to mention that to do the nude figure drawing we signed him up for a class nearby. It was specifically for HS students applying to art school.
This isn’t to contradict @Jazzbutcher because in general they’re correct about grades not mattering as much in terms of admissions…but on the flipside of that if your child does well academically there’s often additional merit aid available. Every little bit helps…so if you’ve got a kid currently in high school, it’s to their benefit to try and keep up their grades as much as possible.
Art schools play the #s games just as much as everyone else and promote and publish the test scores etc of their incoming classes. Obviously there’s not always a correlation between grades in academic studies and future success in creative fields, but its still a component in the #s, aid and admissions and how you try to ‘game’ the system to get the most aid for your child and family.
@Jazzbutcher Thank you Thank you Thank you!
@ArtAngst I was speaking specifically to admissions, not $, but it is partly true. It’s safe to say it is very school dependent as his aid ranged from a low of 20k to a high of 100k. Oh, and per an earlier post, he heard back from CalArts and did not get in.
Kiddo got into Pratt with a very nice scholarship. Still waiting to hear from RISD.
Anyone know how willing schools like Ringling are to up their scholarship?
Ringling is pretty competitive so it’s probably a long shot. But it can’t hurt to try. If you have a letter from the other schools offering a better deal, include it. And have your child write it (or at least sign it!)
Mine got her admission to Pratt today too, and the largest scholarship offer so far! Super excited for her! Takes the sting out of reject from CalArts a bit! I was surprised at the offer from Pratt, because I assumed with it being the most expensive, it would never be an option, but now it is!
@moonpie Congratulations to her. They definitely handed out some nice scholarships.
Still waiting to hear from RISD, so thanks for the March 24th ETA. MICA is being very aggressive with post-communication and potential of earning more via their competitive scholarship, but it’s not D’s first choice. SVA is her first choice and not seeing any signs of ability to get more $$ than already awarded. Good luck everyone!! Can’t wait to hear final choices.
Any thoughts on Pacific Northwest college of art?(PNCA) in Portland? Daughter got in to Reed (the only LAC to which she applied). They have a loose “combined” program. Still waiting on Pratt RIsd and nyu
@CAShirl It’s on the RISD facebook admissions page. In fact, a parent asked if the notification date change has been decided yet. Lucy, the RISD admissions officer who answers any and all questions posted to that page stated:
‘We don’t have an exact date yet. I’ll post on the group when I have a more clear idea.’
There’s a lot of info floating around in that facebook group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/risdadmissions/
For RISD admission facebook just follow the link on their admissions page, there is a direct link there.
Anyone going to SAIC admitted students day in Atlanta? Ill be there with my lavender haired girl tomorrow!
Also re RISD - Lucy on that FB page is really helpful pre & post admissions decisions. So if you have any questions, don’t be afraid to ask.
I did not receive anything from Pratt yet, and I heard some people already did!
I am really nervous, is there chance of getting their mail now? Do they send their rejection letters after 4/1?
We have not heard from a Pratt either. My D applied very late, maybe the day before the deadline.
Whirlwind tour… East Tn State (Digital media design program… she was offered a full scholarship, so we had to at least go look) but it’s for sure not for her. Then drove to Atlanta for the SAIC admitted students reception, and I think it has fallen down on the list (nothing bad, just getting more information on how the classes are chosen, the structure of getting a degree, feels it’s not for someone who is really set on animation… she thinks it’s a wonderful art school!). I must admit the admissions staff are the most kind and supportive of all the schools! Just got home, and had a letter from SCAD increasing the academic scholarship quite a bit (doubled, in fact, and I thought it was good before!). Pratt still offering the most money, but now I think SCAD is a greater percentage… I don’t know, I’ll have to get out my spreadsheet LOL! Hoping for the rest of the decisions this week so we can plan our last few visits, and decide!
