Those extra points come in handy! I remember that a free companion ticket funded our first visit to Pratt when D15 was a junior.
Mail order should be fine and then you don’t have to find a local provider. As long as she gets back home to see her regular person and keep the prescription active, she should be fine with that.
You all have all been so helpful. Lots of great information and things to think about. I think once RISD comes in, then she will really have to sit down and think about what she wants most.
re: RISD Yep, looks like emails next Thursday and letters mailed Friday. I guess accepted students who don’t live near providence but want to visit on accepted students day will have to do a bit of quick planning. Looks like a few frustrated parents on the RISD Admissions Facebook…
@pinkmomagain , Unfortunately I could not get my daughter to go… she says she is busy with school stuff. We visited MICA during portfolio day last year but did not see the sculpture department. We are still waiting to hear the last scholarship award from MICA. They gave her money in January but now they called her and interviewed her for additional money.
@calicogirl, thanks for posting – glad to hear your daughter is enjoying MICA! We are heading to their admitted student’s day this weekend, as it is one of the art schools my daughter is considering.
Just read through this entire thread and took lots of notes! Thank you to all for your candid and insightful comments. My D18 and I just visited RISD last week and heard from the admissions person that they offer no merit aid. She was very clear about that. Has that changed in recent months? I thought they at least gave $ related to Scholastic Awards. Very impressive place, but seemed high-stress to me as well. D loved it, esp the Nature Lab – really unique.
They gave out merit aid last year, according to some posters whose kids got in. In fact it sounded like they have upped the merit aid in order to compete with more generous schools like MICA and Pratt. Perhaps the official party line is no merit aid but once admitted it might be a different story.
@DCLFAN they say that because they don’t offer set merit aid amounts like some schools, but they do offer aid. We had been ‘expecting the worst’ $ wise from them since we’d heard that too, but daughter was offered both scholarship ($28K yearly) and work study $.
Daughter is a freshman there now and yes, it is very high-stress. There’s a lot she loves about the school and the area, but the stress/work level is intense.
