James Chen, good luck to your daughter with remaining schools on her list! We are also waiting to hear back from Pratt and RISD, along with a few universities. My understanding is that Pratt does give merit scholarships, but that RISD mostly gives only need-based financial aid. Pratt has an aid calculator on their site for estimates: https://tcc.ruffalonl.com/(S(ykrp1s2uyd1s0xpz4j4sytcj))/Pratt%20Institute/Freshman%20Students/Scholarship
My D just got an acceptance email from Pratt, so apparently they are starting to release the decisions this week. Last year they came out throughout the second half of March, not all on the same day.
Slightly different topic. Does anyone know if there’s any merit in holding off on your decision? For instance, one parent told me that she didn’t want to let the school know where her son is going just yet–thinking that the schools will increase their offer. Is that a thing?
@nickscoby My D’s art teacher said that in the past some of her students have been able to negotiate for better offers at their preferred schools, especially if they explain that they have a larger scholarship from another school. I’ve also read of parents and students who have successfully gotten increases to their offers just from talking to the schools, so I guess it can happen.
@artdreamer Congrats!
Thanks, James Chen!
Got an acceptance email from Pratt this morning! That means I’m officially done waiting for schools and have been accepted to every college I applied for Congrats to anyone else who’s been accepted as well!
Sorry this is sort of off topic now, but does anybody know what Pratt’s illustration program is like? I’m also very interested in painting so flexibility in courses is important to me when choosing a school.
The parents are always more anxious than kids~ ~
Recently my D is focused on her IB mock test and pays no attention on the Pratt info. What should I do? Would you please check your email whether you’re accepted or not? Sorry Dad, I have no time cos I have to prepare for the final test @-) @-)
Soysoysoy- congrats on the VCUarts acceptance. That’s a huge accomplishment! Give it serious consideration, #2 ranked design school just behind Yale for MFA in the entire country.
James Chen - I love that your daughter is focused on other things! Most of the kids we know, including my daughter, have been barely able to function because of the anxiety.
RISD decisions are posted on the student portals!
A bit of a funny aside in the midst of all our kids’ and parents stress…I saw the message boards light up yesterday re RISD coming out early, texted hubs on whether we should alert S to check…at same time S was texting me to tell me decisions coming…so he & an art classmate spent all of one class refreshing his phone (thankfully teacher ok with it!).
S texted the good news about an hour later that he was accepted while I was crammed in an elevator on a building tour with my sophomores…(they all know my kids and ask about their college picks so our elevator cheered him).
Meanwhile, big sis texts TODAY that oh, yeah a few days ago she was working her RISD mailroom shift helping put together & send out all the accepted students packages (she likes the bag) and also that a prof asked her last week if she had a brother applying. Thanks for the inside info AFTER THE FACT big sis! ;D
@ArtAngst Congrats to S!! Now the decision time.
To the big sis!
Congrats Everyone!
@ArtAngst Congratulations to your son! My D was also accepted to RISD for illustration.
Kiddo was accepted to Pratt!
Sorry, I skipped over everyone’s good news to post my kids’. Congratulations to all!
Congrats to your D @missis ! Is Pratt her first choice? Is MICA still in the running for her? I’m pretty sure that my D is no longer considering the Tufts/SFMA program. She’s still waiting to hear from the other universities, but I think she’s now leaning towards the larger independent art schools over the small art schools in universities, and she is weighing the pros and cons of Pratt, MICA, Parsons and RISD. A trip to NYC is definitely in order, and perhaps one to Baltimore as well.
Pratt is her first choice, I think. Heartbreaking that it is still too expensive even with the scholarship. I wonder if they allow students to accept but defer? It is unclear on the site.
We have two kids in college. I honestly don’t see how the schools think we can afford what they say we can. I know we can negotiate but sheesh.
We are visiting SMFA and MICA next week, and CCS and MIAD later in the week as well. Locally, she got into SAIC (too expensive even with aid and living at home), Columbia and UIC. With aid, Columbia is less than UIC, surprisingly.
