Art School admission 2019

@missis I think that you can defer a year at Pratt, but you can call them to confirm. On their site it says “Deferring to another term or withdrawing: If you decide not to enroll at Pratt or wish to defer to the following term or year, please use our electronic form.” https://www.pratt.edu/admissions/applying/applying-undergraduate/accepted-students/deposited-students-ug/

@missis We listened to the two Tufts webinars-- if you didn’t have a chance to do so, and if you have any questions, we may have the answers if the webinars covered it. My understanding is that Tufts/SFMA doesn’t give merit scholarships, but only need-based.

@missis CONGRATULATIONS! Great news.

Has anyone else noticed that the acceptance rate for Parsons really varies from each place you look??? That’s been really making me a bit skeptical.

I’ve gotten into SAIC, Parsons, MICA, Pratt, and RIT for photography and I’m still waiting to hear back from FIT. But out of all of those options I’m really stuck on which one would be best for me and my major. I really like the idea of being in NYC so Pratt and Parsons have been standing out. But what do you guys think? I’m so nervous!

@missis, my D was also accepted to Columbia College Chicago (last year, she’s now a freshman at MassArt). They offered us a generous amount merit money, and they also told us on the tour that they give credit for AP scores of 3 or higher. The admissions rep told us they try to make the experience as affordable as possible, and it’s a significant savings to get AP credit. I was impressed by CCC’s facilities during our tour (and you can’t beat the location in Chicago!). I know it’s not the most selective or prestigious among art schools, but it looks like a great place for a motivated student. In the end my D chose MassArt (we’re MA residents and get in-state tuition) and is happy with the decision. Good luck on your choice! It’s a shame that it’s all so outrageously expensive. :frowning:

Trying to compare Pratt, Parsons, RISD, Boston University, and NYU for painting. Any thoughts?

My D would be interested in hearing about the same schools for painting @MsArdychan mentioned, as well as MICA and CMU.

D was rejected by RISD but accepted by Parsons.
Still waiting for Pratt and SVA. Anyone knows when SVA release the acceptance?

My D is a freshman at Pratt. Currently immersed in the foundation year, intending to major in 2D animation. If anyone has any questions, feel free to PM me. If I don’t know the answer, I can reach out to my D as well.

@MsArdychan re comparisons - have you visited Boston University? While it is incredibly strong in some majors, we weren’t impressed with the location (much farther away than the main campus) and general facilities for the arts students. This was about 4-5 years ago so things may have changed, but art students were actually staging a protest during our campus visit to get more studio space.

Also note their dorms are also far away from the art buildings AND that can be a major issue safety wise and just generally lugging stuff back and forth when you think about the hours BFA students are expected to put into their work outside of class time.

MICA was very strong in painting when we visited five years ago.

We are visiting Boston University, as well as RISD, Pratt, & Parsons, next week. Thank you @ArtAngst for that insight. I expect my kid to be in the studio at all hours, so safety is a big consideration.

@MsArdychan My D did a pre-college program at RISD this summer and loved it! Still need to visit Pratt, Parsons & MICA in the coming weeks.

RISD has a free car shuttle service that returns students to their dorms or even off-campus housing up to a few miles away in the evening, so that was a nice safety feature. My daughter used it every day while she was there. It’s called RISD Rides: https://info.risd.edu/transportation/#risd-rides

“Sorry this is sort of off topic now, but does anybody know what Pratt’s illustration program is like? I’m also very interested in painting so flexibility in courses is important to me when choosing a school.”

@pthalo - Pratt views illustration as one of three cross-over specialties (along with graphic design and advertising art) within the Communication Design major. So it’s considered a design discipline and the curriculum is very structured. As an interdisciplinary major, Com D will include a LOT of different studios and you will graduate with a comprehensive skill set that allows you to work in a wide variety of fields pertaining to visual communication. However, if you are looking for a school that allows you to supplement your major course of study with lots of free choice, it might not be what you are looking for. Obviously there will be some opportunity to choose studio electives and my D has done several over in the school of art. Painting shouldn’t be a problem as long as there is room in the studio for a non-major.

Check out the major here:

@JBStillFlying thanks for the info on Pratt! Though I don’t think I’ll be considering them anymore. Even with an initial 26k per year scholarship and potentially some more? (I haven’t received the official financial aid package in the mail) I doubt that I would receive enough to make it anywhere near affordable for me.

Hope you are all having better luck with scholarships and financial aid!

@james chen i’ve received my acceptance from sva alr so i would say any time before april 1

@cassidyls Thank you and congrats~
So which one would you consider? Pratt or SVA?

Current senior, just felt like posting this for my own sake for the future and anyone else I guess? got accepted to all but one of my schools. I got accepted by SAIC, CCA, MICA, NJIT, RIT, VCU (arts), and SVA—rejected from USC, as expected lol. I applied for animation for all schools (digital design for njit) but got waitlisted and put into illustration by RIT.

RIT gave me the most money but I honestly don’t know anything regarding the illustration program, if I get accepted into the film and animation program I might consider it more but at the moment MICA is where I want to go!! Soley waiting on the final financial aid numbers that should arrive within the next 2 weeks…crossing my fingers.
if anyone knows anything about RIT’s arts programs please lmk!
