Art School admission 2019

@veehee D just sent her application out for Tyler school of art, however her enthusiasm dipped when she heard that getting into Graphic Design (which is her desired Major) is really hard at Tyler after the foundation year! Talking to someone at the admissions it seemed like GD was the most popular with the least seats. Any thoughts?

The New School/Parsons has a little online loophole prospective students can use to find out if they’ve gotten in before the decision letters go out. Just tried it with D19 and…she’s in! Thrilled for her. Still have to wait for the official email to find out about merit, but it’s great to know she’s all set for her dream school.

@Vineyarder Congrats to your D.
“dream” school might not always come true :slight_smile: however D is prepared for that. We can only do our best given all circumstances…

My D just received a phone call from the Director of Admissions at SFAI–she’s in! He said the letter would follow in a few days! We are soooo excited!

@nickscoby Congrats!!!

Today D got letter from University of Arts today with $24K/year scholarship. So far we have SCAD with $17K a year, U of arts and CCS, detroit (No financial packet yet). CVAD of UNT Texas but that is not an option anymore here.

When do MICA and VCU and Pratt etc send out theirs? For EA?

@SomaRathore congrats!!!

My D received her acceptance letter from Pratt dated 12/14 last year after applying early action.

Kudos! Such great news so early.

Apparently, MICA is notifying their Early Applicants on or around January 11th.

@NYart15 @nickscoby Thank you! Not too far then.

If you don’t mind me asking @SomaRathore, what were your child’s GPA and SAT scores? My child had a 4.29 weighted GPA at end of junior year and a 1290 SAT score and got offered a $9000 academic scholarship. She was only offered $1500 for the achievement scholarship. She plays 3 varsity sports, captain of 2 of them, editor of yearbook, NHS member, world part-time, volunteers, other extra-curriculars, and submitted a portfolio!

@catlover13 She has a 1300 on her only SAT she took. Weighted GPA of about 4.1 I think. She is not into sports but a NAHS and NHS member and LOT of volunteering mostly in a senior home which she has been regularly doing. Others are school and NAHS related and some in the community as and when she was able. Yes she submitted a portfolio and besides school she has a private art teacher. We were actually very surprised with the amount she got with her score and wondering if it could be her AP classes and the scores she got in those that added to it, She was also selected for some district art stuffs and a gallery show.But other than these nothing high profile. Your child seems to be doing a lot more. I have been reading that SCAD negotiates…

VCU was the first acceptance my daughter received last year when she applied EA. She received it on Dec 11th. In her acceptance package she received a letter that she received a scholarship and will be notified later. I believe we received the scholarship notice in Feb. Good Luck!

@NYart15 with Pratt EAs, did you get awards, scholarships, $ etc info with that?

@ArtAngst I can double check but I’m pretty sure she received merit-based aid only with her 12/11 decision letter.

Other than merit based, what other kind does pratt possibly offer? All I found on the website was the GPA/SAT/Portfolio based estimator

@SomaRathore
Need-based, based on FAFSA. But I don’t think we received that letter until quite late…April? It was mainly loan options.

@SomaRathore - we found that estimator to be most helpful in determining how much merit aid my daughter could expect. She went into her portfolio review and asked them to rank it using the estimator’s system which was pretty clever. For her it was all merit. Not sure how much institutional need-based Pratt disburses (suspect not much at all). So your daughter can probably expect the bulk if not all of her aid to be merit-based.

Ditto @JBFlying

@JBStillFlying @NYart15 Thanks! At the NPD we saw the ratings at the end of the sheet she had filled out at the booth, but they never told her how they rated her portfolio and we never thought to ask. They were filling those out “not” in front of the students. We can stick in the GPA and the SAT probably estimate with diff. variations of the portfolio. We filed FAFSA, but no chance of getting any help there. Being in the middle income wise is not always a great thing :wink:
But before anything she has to get accepted. And then the affordability for us comes to view

Thanks @NYart15 and @JBStillFlying ! Didn’t even think to suggest to DS to ask re portfolio and he had a private one and at portfolio review day too. - that was really smart on your kids’ behalves. But all indicated to DS it was ready to go for EA…so fingers crossed!!

Pratt is currently my kid’s fav, so knowing any more re the financials early on will help on the parent end of things.
