I’ve recently completed all of my applications for art schools, and I’ve heard back from some. So far I have gotten into animation at CCA, SCAD, LCAD, and SVA (2D). I’m still waiting to hear back from Ringling. I applied to CalArts as well, but I don’t think I’ll get in. As of right now, I think LCAD and SVA are my top two. I’m having trouble figuring out what would be the better school for me to go to (and if I get into Ringling it will only be harder). I really loved both of them when I visited, but then sometimes I think that perhaps I should be considering SCAD or CCA more. It also doesn’t help that I’m still not 100% sure if I want to specialize in 2D or 3D animation (though I would probably find a way to learn both as much as possible, maybe as electives or summer classes).
Can anyone offer some more information on these schools than what I have found online? Perhaps some experiences?
Not much advice… but my girl is applying to many of the same schools! Good Luck! Can you tell me what you liked about LCAD? My daughter loved the person who reviewed her portfolio at NPD last 2 years, and that’s why she ultimately applied. But if you visited, we would love your thoughts. (SVA is close to top, like you… waiting on a few others!)
Thank you, and best of luck to your daughter as well!
The school seemed to focus much of their attention on their students, which is something I felt was lacking in a school like CalArts. However, I was also the only person on the tour, so that might have had an impact. What initially attracted me to the school (besides a really awesome experience at NPD) was the work the students were producing. The students seemed to be creating some really unique pieces that I didn’t see at other schools. The fundamental classes are also extremely focused on classic fine arts; they believe in strong foundations for the student body. This was definitely reflected later in many of the examples they showed me. It’s incredibly small as well (I think it’s about 500-600 students total), which can be both a good and bad thing; the community seemed very much like a family.
One marker to look for is what companies come on a regular basis to interview on campus.
Also check to see if you can actually graduate in four years or if it might get stretched into five.
Take a good look at student work.
My D graduated from Ringling a few years back. If you get in and have questions I’ll do my best!
Good Luck! (love your sketch!)
Our son goes to LCAD currently. What would you like to know specifically about the college? Our son is a first year graphic design + digital media major, but his roommates are in the animation program.
I’ll try to answer your questions or I can ask his friends who are in the animation program to give me their input.
